Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. This week brings some super '70s soul, some '80s and '90s throwbacks on the Broadway stage and more - including a tribute to one of the original Moody Blues we lost this week.
Curtis Mayfield, The Makings of: A Curtis Mayfield Collection (Rhino) (Apple / Amazon)
The documentary The Makings of Curtis Mayfield - directed by Grammy-winning R&B musician H.E.R. and featuring archival footage and conversations on the Super Fly hitmaker's craft with Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Ernie Isley, Maxwell, Jimmy Jam, Narada Michael Walden, Tom Morello and more - was a bright spot in the SXSW festival line-up this past spring. While there's been no word on when it'll be available to stream, Rhino has released a digital companion to the doc: 21 classic tracks from his deeply soulful discography.
Sam Moore, Plenty Good Lovin': The Lost Solo Album (Warner Music/X5) (Apple / Amazon)
There's plenty more '70s soul where that came from: recently delivered digitally is Plenty Good Lovin', a 2002 collection of tracks recorded by Sam Moore (half of the Southern soul hitmakers Sam & Dave) for a planned solo debut on Atlantic Records in 1970. Only the first two were released as a single, robbing audiences of a killer workout with producer King Curtis and a murderer's row of session players, including Curtis on saxophones, bassist Chuck Rainey, drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, guitarist Eric Gale, backing vocals by The Sweet Inspirations and keyboards by both Donny Hathaway and - in her only instrumental contribution for a labelmate - the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. (Thanks to Aretha authority Andrew Martone for the tip!)
The New Christy Minstrels, Presenting The New Christy Minstrels (Columbia/Legacy) (Apple / Amazon)
The Christies' first album comes to digital services in a newly remastered edition. The album was originally released in August 1962 as the group was winning over audiences nightly at the Troubadour; in the fall, the country would get to know them better when they joined Andy Williams on his new NBC-TV show. Presenting The New Christy Minstrels would go on to win a Grammy Award for Best Recording by a Chorus, stay on the charts for two-and-a-half years, and inaugurate a richly varied discography for Columbia Records. The album features such folk staples as "I Know Where I'm Goin'," "Big Rock Candy Mountain," and Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," which opened the LP and was released as a single. It hit the charts weeks later in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Christies' lineup for this album includes Randy Sparks, Jackie Miller, Nick Woods, Dolan Ellis, Art Podell, Jerry Yester, Terry Wadsworth, Karol Dugan, John Forsha, and Billy Cudmore. (Yester, Wadsworth, Dugan, Forsha, and Cudmore all departed the group when they transitioned from a studio act to a live act at the behest of Columbia Records. The fivesome would be replaced by Barry McGuire, Barry Kane, Peggy Connelly, Larry Ramos and Clarence Treat.) Here's a chance to revisit one of the landmark albums of the folk era.
Disney's Hercules: Original London Cast Recording (Walt Disney Records) (Apple / Amazon)
After runs at New York's Central Park, New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse, and Hamburg, Germany's Neue Flora, Disney's Hercules has come to the West End of London, where it's packing houses at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. This new cast recording of the Alan Menken/David Zippel score features Luke Brady as Hercules, Trevor Dion Nicholas as Phil, Stephen Carlile as Hades, Mae Ann Jorolan as Meg, and Brianna Ogunbawo, Candace Furbert, Malinda Parris, Sharlene Hector, and Robyn Rose-Li as The Muses. Fans of the movie can expect such favorites as "Go the Distance," "Zero to Hero," and "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" alongside all-new songs. Alan Menken's demo of the new ballad "To Be Human" is included on the cast album as a bonus track. The CD is due November 21 and the vinyl LP December 5.
The Rescues, "Have to Have You" from The Lost Boys: The Santa Carla Sessions (Verve/Republic) (Apple / Amazon)
The band The Rescues is previewing its score to the upcoming Broadway musical The Lost Boys - based on the 1987 teenage dark comedy/horror film and opening at the Palace Theatre in 2026 - with the rocking "Have to Have You," featuring members of the Broadway cast alongside none other than Slash of Guns N' Roses!
The Rockstar Project, The Rockstar Project (SuperVisible Multi Media) (Apple / Amazon)
Another intriguing curio from our pals at SuperVisible: a turn-of-the-millennium offering from North Jersey musicians Dave Schmidt and Bernie Davis. Taking inspiration from power-pop, P-funk and even Ween, the pair recruited a host of local musicians (including SuperVisible mainstay David Wallingford) for a lovably quirky nine-song set that'll put some pep in your step heading into the long weekend.
TSD remembers The Moody Blues' John Lodge (1943-2025) who has died at the age of 82. A singer, songwriter, and bassist, Lodge joined the band in 1966 and remained a member until the band's retirement in 2018. His first album with the Moodies, 1967's Days of Future Passed, moved the band from R&B to progressive rock with its grandiose themes and fusion of pop, psychedelic, and classical sounds. When it came time to assemble a single disc greatest-hits collection in 1984, many of Lodge's own compositions were there: "Ride My See-Saw," "Talking Out of Turn," "Gemini Dream" (co-written with Justin Hayward), "Isn't Life Strange," and "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)." But Lodge wasn't just a singer, and the Moody Blues were no ordinary rock-and-roll band. He remained dedicated to them even when pursuing solo projects and outside collaborations; his 2015 solo album 10,000 Light Years Ago even reunited him with former bandmates Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder. Earlier this year, John released the EP Love Conquers All. Though we're saddened by his unexpected passing, the legacy of song he leaves behind will remain a richly rewarding and enduring one.

Neil Young Archives Vol. 3 has finally made it to streaming 🥳
Thanks for posting this! I have been waiting for it to arrive. I have the CDs but like to be able to stream too.
Where The Go-Betweens supposed to be mentioned? I saw them in the tags, but don't see the band mentioned in the post.
They were! Domino announced that the remastered albums from the latest 'G Stands for Go-Betweens' anthology were supposed to hit digital stores this week, but that appears to still be in development, because we haven't seen any links. (Forgot to untag them before publishing.)
It's about time that the musical 🎼 genius of the late, great oratorical song biography of Curtis Mayfield be revealed to this soulless Gen.Z to get grounded on what's important through musical poetry and sounds!
Study to show thyself approved!

Was it necessary to criticize Gen Z so harshly? Sir, perhaps you should open your ears more and listen carefully to current music. You might be pleasantly surprised by some of it.
BTW I am a baby boomer.
