Having released arguably more reissues and box sets than any major label in 2025, Rhino has already set sights on their first catalogue title of 2026. Might you be interested? In a word: Yes.
Following a deluxe box set of Close to the Edge this past spring, the label will next give the lavish treatment to 1973's Tales from Topographic Oceans. Available February 6, this 12CD/2LP/Blu-ray box set will offer more than a dozen unreleased outtakes and live tracks alongside a suite of new mixes of the original album by acclaimed engineer Steven Wilson. Building upon a mix he was commissioned to do in 2016, Wilson has now revisited the original double album in stereo, Dolby Atmos and DTS-MA 5.1 surround - along with an instrumental mix - all available across the first half of the new set and its accompanying Blu-ray. (The remastered original mix will be included on two CDs and two LPs.) Writer and Yes aficionado Syd Schwartz has penned new liner notes for the set, and Rhino's online store throws in a lithograph of the album's memorable cover, signed by its artist Roger Dean and limited to 500 prints total.
Topographic Oceans' sprawling concept was dug into by frontman Jon Anderson, who was immersed in Paramahansa Yogananda's bestselling Autobiography of a Yogi. Drawing from a lengthy footnote that described four shastras (Hindu texts outlining basic precepts of social and religious life), Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe primarily conceived four pieces of music that would each take up one side of a vinyl album. Bassist Chris Squire and new drummer Alan White (replacing Bill Bruford after his exit) went with the flow, agreeably retreating to Morgan Studios in Willesden to utilize a then-revolutionary 24-track recording system; keyboardist Rick Wakeman, however, felt the musical ideas were too free-form and padded, and expressed his frustration then and now. (Wakeman would befriend Ozzy Osbourne during the sessions, who was recording Sabbath Bloody Sabbath with Black Sabbath in the same studio.)
While the album sharply divided critics upon release, Yes' success among rock fans continued apace. In England, it would top the charts for two weeks, additionally becoming the first album there to be certified gold strictly off of pre-orders. Following the stateside success of Fragile and Close to the Edge in the preceding years, Tales became their third Top 10 studio release in America, reaching No. 6. A subsequent tour, featuring the album performed in full alongside additional material, stretched on for more than a year and over 150 dates. (White claimed that an onstage malfunction, in which a mechanical structure around his drum kit failed to open, inspired a similar scene in This is Spinal Tap.) Wakeman would briefly depart the band after the tour ended, but his contributions can be heard on the album's bonus material, which offers material from three concerts in 1973 and 1974. The box also includes early run-throughs and alternates of the Topographic sides (many of which are unreleased) and five "single edits" Wilson created from the album to emphasize the more conventional musical passages.
You can pre-order the expanded Tales from Topographic Oceans below; it'll be out February 6. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases).

Is it known yet whether the 2-cd remix of the original album will be available separate from the boxed set?
Interesting but I do wonder why instead of revisiting albums already available in surround, attebtion isn't turned to those Yes albums still not in surround? There's no deluxe edition of say "Going for the one" who wouldn't love to hear Wonderous Stories in atmos?
I already have the 2014 remix & 3 discs & the bd alone is 12 hours long
what is the point?
who the hell is buying this stuff?
