Welcome to this week's Release Round-Up! With Record Store Day's Black Friday event taking place today, the slate is usually a small one...not so this year, though, thanks to Rhino's CD releases of numerous RSD titles. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
Neil Young, Tonight's the Night 50 (Reprise/NYA)
1CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Greedy Hand Store
2LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Greedy Hand Store
Clear Vinyl: Greedy Hand Store
Neil Young's sixth album, released in 1975 but mostly recorded two years earlier, was the closer to his "Ditch Trilogy." It remains one of his darkest works, responding in real time to the overdose deaths of Crazy Horse's Danny Whitten and friend and roadie Bruce Berry with bleak songs and wearied vocals. This reissue features a redesigned cover and six bonus tracks, including the unreleased "Walk On" and an alternate take of the title track. (The other tracks, including the Joni Mitchell-assisted "Raised on Robbery," are taken from Archives Vol. II, and the version of album cut "Lookout Joe" is also an unreleased version from 1973.) Note that Amazon appears to have (temporarily?) halted orders on these titles; all formats are - as of this writing - available directly via the Greedy Hand Store. Read more here.
Madonna, Bedtime Stories: The Untold Chapter (Warner/Rhino)
2CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Madonna.com (with postcards)
Vinyl EP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Madonna.com (with postcards)
Vinyl LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
After teasing it last year - and not long after this year's release of a similar Ray of Light-era remix collection - Madonna will explore rare and unreleased material tied to another one of her most celebrated albums of the '90s, Bedtime Stories, with another EP of unissued tracks. Bedtime Stories - The Untold Chapter offers eight remixes, demos and outtakes from the Queen of Pop's sixth album, originally released in 1994. In addition to previously released mixes of the singles "Secret" and "Human Nature," the EP includes versions of tracks like "Love Won't Wait" - a Shep Pettibone collaboration ultimately recorded by Gary Barlow of British boy band Take That - along with alternate versions of the Dallas Austin collaborations "Let Down Your Guard" and "Freedom," released as a B-side to "Secret" and on the compilation Carnival! The Rainforest Foundation, respectively. The EP will be available on black vinyl or part of a 2CD set that pairs the set with the original Bedtime Stories album, which itself will be reissued on silver vinyl. The artwork includes outtakes from a shoot with photographer Paolo Roversi that were vetoed by Warner for the album cover; orders from Madonna's or Rhino's official stores will include prints of said photos. (One was used for the "Bedtime Story" single.) Read more here.
Fleetwood Mac, Live 1975 (Warner/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Live 1975, due on CD alongside its double vinyl release at all participating Record Store Day Black Friday retailers, is a collection of concert tracks from Fleetwood Mac in their first year as the classic quintet line-up of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. (All these tracks were included on a deluxe edition of the band's self-titled album in 2018, minus a rendition of the Christine-sung composition "Over My Head," because it was recorded in 1976.)
The Doors, Live in Copenhagen, 1968 (Elektra/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Believe it or not, there's still treasures to discover from The Doors. Live in Copenhagen, 1968 offers a show the group did in Denmark following the release of that year's Waiting on the Sun. (Portions were previously included on a deluxe edition of that album.) This general CD release will complement the limited vinyl edition coming to participating indie retailers for Record Store Day Black Friday today.
Love, The Complete Elektra Albums (Elektra/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
One of Rhino's flashiest vinyl box sets for Record Store Day Black Friday is also getting a general CD release thoday! Love's The Complete Elektra Albums includes the definitive selection of Arthur Lee and company's inimitable work. In addition to newly remastered versions of 1966's Love and Da Capo and the landmark Forever Changes (1967), this box also includes the CD debut of Lee's original mix for 1969's Four Sail (first released on vinyl for its 40th anniversary in 2019) plus a disc of single sides and rarities that appeared on a series of early '00s CD reissues of these albums.
Alice Cooper, Welcome to My Nightmare: Live at The Forum, 6/17/75 (Warner/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Five decades after he welcomed you to his nightmare, there's a whole new way to enjoy Alice Cooper's solo debut! Welcome to My Nightmare: Live At The Forum, Los Angeles, 6/17/75 offers a fully unreleased vintage concert set of 18 tracks spanning not only Nightmare but hits from his time in the band of the same name, including "No More Mr. Nice Guy," "School's Out," "I'm Eighteen" and more. A vinyl version drops today as part of the Record Store Day Black Friday festivities.
The Best of Eric Burdon and WAR (Avenue/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Condensed from this year's The Complete CD Collection, this is a 2CD, 20-track overview of funk-rock combo War's earliest recordings with British rocker Eric Burdon of The Animals. It includes three unreleased tracks, including an unedited remix of this iteration's biggest hit, "Spill the Wine." A double vinyl version will be available today, too, exclusively at participating retailers for Record Store Day Black Friday.
The English Beat, The Beat at the BBC (Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
After putting the beloved British ska revivalists' studio albums back into print, Rhino next takes The Beat's complete BBC recordings - most for John Peel, some for Mike Read and David "Kid" Jensen - and compiles them into one set for the first time. (Some tracks had been released on a box set by Shout! Factory, others as bonus tracks on Edsel reissues.) Includes versions of favorites like "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Tears of a Clown," "Hands Off... She's Mine," "Twist & Crawl," "Ranking Full Stop," "Too Nice to Talk To" and "Save It for Later." This title is also available as a limited vinyl set today for Record Store Day Black Friday.
The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (Live at the OKC Zoo Amphitheatre, Aug. 30, 2024) (Warner/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The Flaming Lips performed their commercial breakthrough Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots in full at the Summer Freak Out festival in their hometown of Oklahoma City last year; the set is now out on general CD as well as a double-vinyl edition for Record Store Day Black Friday.
Dwight Yoakam, And Then I Wrote...The First Three Albums of the '90s (Reprise/Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
This 4CD box set from the Bakersfield country hero (also available on 4 LPs for Record Store Day Black Friday) includes a full LP of rarities from the era including covers of "Things We Said Today," "Suspicious Minds," and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."
Various Artists, Journey to the Center of a Mind: A Mainstream Records '60s Psych Adventure (Sundazed) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Sundazed re-presents ten albums of far-out psych-pop and -rock from the catalogue of Bob Shad's (ironically named?) Mainstream Records label. You'll find rare LPs by The Amboy Dukes, Tangerine Zoo, December's Children, The Orient Express, and others, while a 48-page booklet puts it all into perspective.
Just in Time: Original Broadway Cast Recording (Atlantic) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Look out, old Bobby is back! Mr. Bobby Darin returns to his home of Atlantic Records - sort of! - with this new cast recording preserving Jonathan Groff's incandescent performance as the late singer. The album also features Erika Henningsen as Sandra Dee and Gracie Lawrence as Connie Francis, but the unquestionable star is Groff, who channels the late Darin's energy, bravado, swagger, and, most of all, joie de vivre. Four Darin deep cuts have been recorded as bonus tracks ("I Am," "Rock Island Line," "Eighteen Yellow Roses," "Orange Furniture Store") and they join the expected favorites such as "Mack the Knife," "If I Were a Carpenter," "Beyond the Sea," and "Splish Splash." Just in Time is still packing houses eight times a week at Circle in the Square on Broadway. Amazon is currently not accepting pre-orders for this title; Barnes & Noble offers another option.
