Love’s Great Adventure: Ultravox’s ‘The Collection’ Goes Deluxe on CD/Blu-ray Box

One of the year’s last big catalogue titles is a new expansion of Ultravox’s The Collection, due out tomorrow, December 5. Originally released in 1984 and collecting more than a dozen singles from the band’s most popular early ’80s run, the set has now been greatly expanded to provide an even more complete picture of the group’s “classic,” Midge Ure-led line-up, encompassing hits, B-sides, 15 previously unreleased mixes and a trove of rare video footage. Central to all deluxe formats (a 4CD/2 Blu-ray box set and a 4LP edition pressed on clear vinyl) is the newly-curated The Collection II, a sequel to the original compilation offering tracks from post-Collection albums with Ure (1986’s U-Vox and 2012’s Brilliant) plus a few remixes from the band’s vault as well as recently created ones by engineer Steven Wilson for a series of deluxe reissues of classic Ure-led albums like Vienna and Rage in Eden. Wilson, Blank & Jones and Ure also lend their talents creating extended mixes of 10 classic Ultravox sides for this set; the Blu-ray Discs offer restored music videos and more than two dozen performances from BBC shows. The box comes in a 12″ rigid slipcase alongside two 20-page booklets offering rare photos and complete lyrics.
Emerging in mid-’70s London (after performing for several years under the name Tiger Lily), Ultravox represented an artier, more electronic side of the late-decade punk-rock groundswell. (Their 1977 self-titled debut was produced by both Steve Lillywhite and Brian Eno, whose striking electronic team-up with David Bowie, Low, was released a month prior.) After the departure of found guitarist Stevie Shears and vocalist John Foxx in 1978 and 1979, the group recruited singer/guitarist Ure, who keyboardist Billy Currie had worked with alongside singer Steve Strange in the New Wave group Visage. Signing a new deal with Chrysalis and armed with a streamlined new set of tunes, 1980’s Vienna became their first of seven straight Top 5 LPs (including a live album as well as the original release of The Collection) – and the title track became their first Top 10 hit as well, peaking at No. 2. The quartet (Ure, Currie, bassist Chris Cross and drummer Warren McCann) went strong throughout most of the ’80s, scoring hits like “All Stood Still,” “Hymn” and “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes”; Ure also co-wrote Band Aid’s 1984 charity smash “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” with Bob Geldof of Boomtown Rats. Ultravox would split up in 1987, and Currie attempted new line-ups on two albums in the ’90s – but the classic quartet reunited one last time from 2008 to 2013, releasing one last album, 2012’s Brilliant. (Cross died last year.)
The deluxe editions of The Collection, limited to 5000 copies on CD/Blu-ray and 2500 on clear vinyl, are available alongside new CD and 2LP remasters of the original album. They’ll hit stores tomorrow, December 5 and can be ordered below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)
