Cherry Red’s suite of labels have already planned a healthy amount of box sets and reissues for the first quarter of the year. One such title is Robinsongs’ fourth collection devoted to the work of British jazz-rock outfit Level 42 – and since the last one of them we covered was a volume in 2021, the time seemed right to catch you up while sharing the new news, too.

The work kicked off with The Complete Polydor Years 1980-1984, a 10CD set offering the band’s first five albums (Level 42 (1981), The Early Tapes – July/Aug 1980 (1982), The Pursuit of Accidents (1982), Standing in the Light (1983) – featuring their first U.K. Top 10, “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)” – and True Colours (1984)) plus an additional five discs encompassing singles, B-sides, remixes and other rarities. That same year, The Complete Polydor Years Volume Two 1985-1989 rounded out the rest of the decade across another 10 CDs, featuring the live album A Physical Presence (1985), studio albums World Machine (1985) (which included the band’s signature hit, the worldwide Top 10 “Something About You”), the U.K. hit-packed Running in the Family (1987) – featuring “Lessons in Love,” the title track, “To Be with You Again” and “It’s Over” – and 1988’s Staring At the Sun alongside another five discs of non-LP material and rarities. Two years later, in 2023, The Later Years 1991-1998 was a 7CD set featuring the group’s studio albums for RCA – 1991’s Guaranteed and 1994’s Forever Now – alongside another batch of non-album collections, this time also featuring Polydor-era material that was remixed to promote contemporary compilations.

With that all up to speed, The Later Years 2001-2020 is another 7CD compilation offering a little bit of studio material and a lot of remixes and rarities. At the time, after period of inactivity in the ’90s, founding members Mark King (vocals/bass) and Mike Lindup (keyboards) secured purchase of the band name, which King planned to use with his current touring band: younger brother Nathan on guitar, keyboardist Lynon Connah, drummer Gary Husband and saxophonist Sean Freeman. When it came time to record the new studio album Retroglide (2006), King not only relied on these members but some former ones as well: founding guitarist Boon Gould co-wrote every track and played a solo on closing track “Ships,” while Lindup returned to the studio for the sessions. (Gould’s brother Phil, the band’s original drummer, reportedly made uncredited contributions to that track as well, marking a brief return of the band’s “classic” 1979-1987 line-up.) Lindup succeeded Connah as the band’s full-time studio and live keyboardist in 2006, and drummer Pete Ray Biggin would join in 2010. That line-up would re-record an assortment of acoustic tracks for a 2010 album and 25th anniversary re-recording of Running in the Family; both albums have been combined on an acoustic disc in this box. The Later Years continues with the self-released 2013 EP Sirens – their first to feature an expanded horn section of trumpeter Dan Carpenter and trombonist Nichol Thompson alongside Freeman, an addition that continues in concert to this day – and features another four discs of radio edits and remixes, mostly modern dance takes on 1981 single “Starchild” and “Lessons in Love.”

As with the previous sets, The Later Years 2001-2020 was compiled with the full cooperation of the group, alongside band authorities Paul Waller and Simon Carson. Daryl Easlea of Record Collector has penned another set of liner notes, drawing from interviews with band members past and present. Each disc is housed in its own individual wallet and packed in a hard clamshell case.
