Coming Up: Paul McCartney’s “Man on the Run” Soundtrack Due Later This Month
Later this month, on February 19 only, director Morgan Neville’s documentary Paul McCartney: Man on the Run will enjoy a limited theatrical release. Then, on February 27, the film arrives on Prime Video for home streaming. At a running time of almost two hours, it chronicles McCartney’s artistic rebirth in the 1970s in the aftermath of The Beatles’ breakup, including the rise of Wings, via archival footage, Linda McCartney’s photographs, and new interviews with Paul and the McCartney family as well as Sean Ono Lennon, Mick Jagger, Chrissie Hynde, and others. Coinciding with the Prime Video release on February 27, MPL and Capitol will release a soundtrack album on CD, vinyl, and digital formats.
The one-disc, 12-track collection draws on recordings spanning Paul’s 1970 solo debut McCartney (“That Would Be Something”) through the 1980 sequel McCartney II (“Coming Up”) including the hits “Band on the Run” and “Mull of Kintyre” and three previously unreleased tracks: the live Rockshow version of “Live and Let Die,” a rough mix of the 1979 Back to the Egg single “Arrow Through Me,” and, most tantalizingly, “Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance,” an otherwise-unheard song written for Paul’s pal Twiggy and ultimately used to accompany a production number in the 1973 James Paul McCartney television special. The soundtrack also features the demo of “Silly Love Songs” from the Wings at the Speed of Sound Archive Collection set.
The documentary and soundtrack follow such recent projects as the book Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run and the WINGS self-titled compilations on CD and vinyl. The soundtrack CD is housed in a digipak and includes a 12-page booklet while the 180-gram black vinyl version boasts a foldout poster. You’ll find the full track listing and pre-order links below. Huh. Looking forward to the film, but the soundtrack sure seems… Paltry (Paultry?).
Presumably, there’s more than just 12 songs in the film. Or is there? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. A few rarities to whet fan’s appetites, but only a few.
If anything, the “Arrow Through Me” rough mix is going to make some fans upset there’s still no London Town/Back to the Egg deluxe edition box (I am not one of those people, but I feel bad for those waiting so long).
Does anyone need still more releases of songs like Band on the Run, Let Me Roll It, or Coming Up in their usual, original forms?
I’ll stream the rarities, but that’s it. Macca fans are better served getting the fairly recent One Hand Clapping release. That collection’s terrific.
Yet another artifact/souvenir from McCartney. Surely nobody is buying this for the music?
