Jive Talkin’: Bee Gees’ Extended Dance Mixes Reissued on New Box Set

Bee Gees You Should Be Dancing
PRE-ORDER NOW FROM UDISCOVERMUSIC.COM

This morning, Universal unveiled a limited edition 4LP box set rounding up fourteen extended dance versions of Bee Gees classics.  You Should Be Dancing: The 12″ Collection is available for pre-order now exclusively through the Bee Gees’ and Universal Music’s online storefront and is limited to 1,000 units only.  It will ship on or around February 27.  Alas, much like the last time the group’s extended mixes were reissued (2015’s Extended EP, on Rhino), this collection will be unavailable on compact disc.

You Should Be Dancing features the original Disco Mixes of Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb’s Saturday Night Fever classics “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “More Than a Woman,” along with vintage seventies mixes of the pre-Fever dancefloor perennials “You Should Be Dancing,” “Boogie Child,” and “You Stepped Into My Life.”  These tracks are joined by five previously unreleased extended mixes of 1975’s “Nights on Broadway” and “Jive Talkin’,” 1979’s “Tragedy” and “Love You Inside Out,” and “If I Can’t Have You.”  (While Yvonne Elliman’s chart-topping take of “If I Can’t Have You” produced by Freddie Perren was included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the Bee Gees’ own recording was placed on the flipside of “Stayin’ Alive.”  Both “Jive Talkin'” and “You Should Be Dancing” were featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack despite pre-dating the film.)

SG Lewis’ 2021 remix of another Fever standard, “More Than a Woman,” was a viral hit; it makes its physical debut on this collection.  (Both the Bee Gees’ and Tavares’ renditions of the song were included on the Fever soundtrack, with Tavares’ recording going to the top ten in the U.K. and the top 40 of the U.S. Pop and Soul charts).  Lewis’ remix hit No. 6 on the Dance chart in 2021.  You Should Be Dancing concludes with two 1993 mixes – the original album version and Ben Liebrand’s remix – of “Decadance,” a reimagined version of the box set’s title song.

You Should Be Dancing: The 12″ Collection is limited to 1,000 units and pre-orders are open now at the links below.

  1. When Capitol/UMG acquired the BeeGees catalog, a few years ago, they said it included all the groups recordings, including unreleased material. So far all we are getting are hits collections, colored vinyl and now this. Last year was the 50th anniversary of “Main Course” that should have gotten a deluxe edition. The BeeGees catalog after 1970 needs to be upgraded to the level that Rhino did on their first four albums.

  2. We Could Be Dancing with a bit more effort…

$80!* for four 12″ singles, on standard black vinyl, no ‘announced’ liner notes, and mediocre artwork, at best??? Not to mention, NO CD edition (?), which I may have considered. Sorry UMe, but that’s a HARD PASS for me.

*(not incl. shipping + sales tax)

  3. Correction: Yvonne Elliman’s hit was “If I Can’t Have You”, not “More Than A Woman.”

I’m good if this ever hits digital services, as I’m almost positive physical CD is not gonna happen.

What an utter disappointment UMG’s handling of the catalog has been thus far.

  4. Okay, now this would have been a GOLDEN opportunity to issue this collection, much like the very recent WINGS ‘Greatest Hits’ collection, in a new, BluRay Dolby Atmos remastered version to introduce/re-introduce an audience to the disco genius of this band back in the day…what are they waiting for? Pretty soon there won’t be any Boomers left who would fork out the dough for such a release.

  5. I might be on board for this, MIGHT be. I wish the running times of these tracks would have been published. Like many of you here, I would prefer a CD issue but would not be upset with digital availability.

  6. I was ready to throw my money down the minute I read the headline…only to find out that NO CD version will be released! What a tragedy (pun intended).
    No CD, no sale.
