Pink Floyd are revisiting their latest catalogue title with a standalone issue of a celebrated live bootleg on new formats – and they’re also planning a unique new compilation.

The group’s Wish You Were Here 50 was packed with extras, most notably Live from the Los Angeles Sports Arena, April 26th, 1975. This performance, featuring key selections from the 1975 album as well as a full performance of the group’s 1973 masterpiece The Dark Side of the Moon, was taped by legendary bootlegger Mike Millard and restored for official release by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. The somewhat confusing formats of the physical and digital packaging meant it was only available on a Blu-ray disc as part of a larger box set, or to stream and download. Finally, Sony Music will release two special physical versions of the album: a 4LP edition available at participating indie retailers on Record Store Day (Saturday, April 18), followed by a 2CD general release a week later, on April 24. (The 2CD was originally planned to come out as an “RSD First” title on the 18th.) These releases will give all Pink Floyd collectors a chance to own this set in any or all the current formats most listeners enjoy music.

Wilson is also involved in a new, unusual compilation coming out on CD, LP and digital on June 5. 8-Tracks is, as one might guess, an eight-track condensed overview of Pink Floyd’s ’70s material (save for 1970’s Atom Heart Mother). It includes singles “One of These Days” (from 1971’s Meddle), “Money” (from The Dark Side of the Moon) and “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2” and “Comfortably Numb” (from 1979’s double album The Wall), as well as Dark Side album cut “Time” and Wish You Were Here‘s title track. Honoring the format this collection is named after, 8-Tracks will be sequenced in two continuous programs edited by Steven Wilson, with sections from the original multitrack tapes utilized to foster the transitions between songs. Additionally, closing track “Pigs on the Wing” (from 1977’s Animals) will be heard in a rare, longer version that was previously only available on – you guessed it! – that album’s eight-track cartridge release. (Happily, there will be no gimmicky eight-track format release of 8-Tracks.)

Happily? Speak for yourself! I’d gladly buy this on the 8-track format, as I listen to 8-tracks even more often than CDs most days. It’s just puzzling that the long version of “Pigs On The Wing” is finally making its debut on non-8-track formats on a comp of material every Pink Floyd fan already has, as opposed to a comp of rarities that only appeared on now-out-of-print “immersion” editions.

  2. The long version of “Pigs…” is on the Snowy White “Goldtop” compilation – on CD but probably never on 8 track. May save you “searching for….”

  3. Wait… So both the Springsteen CD AND the Pink Floyd CD originally scheduled for RSD are instead coming out later??

I mean, fine, I guess. Presumably they’ll be readily available for anyone who wants them and not the bulls*** scarcity of RSD. Just weird that both titles had their CDs delayed.

Well saves me money on RSD. No interest in buying either a four LP (Flioyd) or 5 LP (Bruce) set. I will still get the Billy Strings and Jerry Garcia titles on LP though (Would’ve preferred CDs though).
