True Faith: New Order’s ’90s Compilations Get Expanded

New Order will visit their mid-’90s compilation years – with a whole host of mostly trance remixes – on a new 4CD reissue.
True to its name, (the best & the rest of) New Order will include both the 1994 hits set (the best of) New Order and its 1995 follow-up (the rest of) New Order. The former featured their biggest hits up to 1993’s Republic and new mixes of songs like “Bizarre Love Triangle,” “True Faith” and ‘Round & Round,” while the latter collected 10 mostly recent remixes, including a handful of exclusive tracks. For this new package, those discs will be augmented by a further two CDs of remixes and bonus tracks, including the versions exclusive to U.S. and cassette pressings of (the best of) New Order and plenty more period remixes, including many which were only ever on vinyl and even a few unreleased cuts, including the first focus track: a vintage mix of Republic track “Spooky” by Cheshire dance act Sub Sub (who later morphed into indie rock band Doves). Cut-down editions will include a 2CD version featuring just the first two discs of the 4CD set, while two vinyl titles will offer (the best of) on two LPs and (the rest of) on three, including the two cassette-exclusive tracks.
These compilations were sort of unusual, arriving less than a decade after the group’s wildly successful 1987 collection Substance. In the intervening years, the band only released two albums – 1989’s house-influenced Technique and the accessible alt-rock of 1993’s Republic (featuring “Regret,” the group’s biggest U.S. hit) – and were by this point unofficially broken up. (the best of) New Order was certainly a feather in the cap of the band’s then-label London Records, who’d picked up the group after longtime homebase Factory Records collapsed. Promotion for (the best of) and (the rest of) reflected how New Order’s influential electronic sound gave way to a host of new dancefloor sounds, with new mixes commissioned from Paul Oakenfold, Dave Clarke, Howie B., Armand Van Helden, Joe T. Vanelli and Tall Paul. Both albums hit the Top 5 of the U.K. albums chart, ensuring that the group remained beloved when they eventually reconvened for 2001’s Get Ready.
The repackaged titles will be available on July 17 and can be pre-ordered below. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
