You’re My Everything: Sue and Sunny’s Sue Glover Goes Solo with “For No Reason at All,” Premieres Duet with Davy Jones

Sue Glover is stepping back into the spotlight.
As one-half of the duo Sue and Sunny with her sister Sunny Leslie, Sue’s powerful voice graced many of the most significant records of the rock era. A (very!) partial list of her credits includes Elton John’s “Your Song” and “Tiny Dancer,” Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes,” T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy” and “Children of the Revolution,” Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” and “On the Radio,” and Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady.” As a member of Brotherhood of Man, Sue’s voice was prominent on the international hit “United We Stand.” You can also watch sue supporting Murray Head as he introduced television audiences to “Superstar.” This Friday, June 12, 7a Records will release Sue’s first album since 1976’s Solo – and it’s been well worth the wait.
After reconnecting with musician Steve Annetts, Glover revisited decades of recording. With remastering by Bob Clarke, refreshed arrangements by Bobby Jo Morledge, and new vocals added by her daughter to flesh out the original tracks, For No Reason at All collects 20 gems from Sue’s archives, almost all of which have never been heard before. In addition to duets with vocalists Bob Saker (whose songs were recorded by The Foundations, Helen Shapiro, Slade, and others) and her bandmate in The Brotherhood of Man, Tony Burrows (the voice of Edison Lighthouse, First Class, The Pipkins, and White Plains, For No Reason at All premieres a duet with the late Davy Jones, the enchanting and romantic “You’re My Everything.”
The treasures on For No Reason at All are many. No fewer than a dozen of its songs were written or co-written by Sue, including the dramatic “Driving Blind” and moving “Running Scared.” Also well-represented on For No Reason at All is songwriter Tony Waddington (The Flirtations’ “Nothing But a Heartache,” The Rubettes’ “Sugar Baby Love,” Mac and Katie Kissoon’s “Sugar Candy Kisses”) who supplied Sue with such compositions as the pulsating “Don’t Let Your Feelings Show.” Jazz pianist and composer Roger Webb, well-known both for his recordings and his film and television themes including George and Mildred and Miss Jones and Son, was one of Sue’s most cherished collaborators. The moody “You and I” and theatrical “Right to Be Wrong” are among the late Webb’s songs getting a belated showcase here.
The beautifully melancholy title track was written by Barry Mann and also recorded by Mann, Mac Davis, and Anne Murray. “When You Come Home Tonight” was gifted to Sue by Christopher Gunning and John Dawson Reed who had previously written “For Only a Day” which she performed on A Song for Europe 1981 (the UK’s pre-selection competition for Eurovision). Glover’s renditions of the bouncy, bubblegum-flavored “Beggars Can’t Be Choosers” and soft, ruminative “As You Close the Door” first appeared on a 1975 DJM single while “Trip Along” was first heard on the original Solo LP. Collectively, these 20 varied pop songs reflect every side of an expressive singer whose versatility has long been among her greatest assets.
For No Reason at All is housed in a six-panel digipak and includes a full-color 20-page booklet with photos, full lyrics, and liner notes by TSD’s Joe Marchese based on a new interview with Sue Glover. With this release from 7a Records, Sue’s remarkable voice shines anew. It’s due on Friday, June 12, and you can find the track listing and order links below.
