One of the biggest Broadway musicals of the last decade is getting celebrated in a big way for its 10th anniversary. Rhino has announced Rise Up! Hamilton: The Anthology, a heavy-duty 5CD or 7LP+7″ box set honoring Lin-Manuel Miranda’s acclaimed show. The set, available September 25, will include three albums’ worth of material from the musical – the original cast recording, the chart-topping covers project The Hamilton Mixtape, and the first physical release of the Hamildrops series of bonus recordings inspired by the production – along with additional audio extras, an 80-page book, and collectible ephemera. A bonus single – the live “HamilTEN Megamix” arranged for a special cast reunion at the Tony Awards in 2025 – rounds out the physical package and is also available digitally, albeit without its B-side, Miranda’s original demo of standout “My Shot.”

A certified phenomenon when it premiered off-Broadway at the Public Theater in 2015, Hamilton only became more of a game-changer over time once it opened up on the Great White Way and beyond. Conceived by Miranda as a story of “America then, as told by America now,” the show utilized hip-hop, R&B and pop styles to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton, America’s first secretary of the treasury and a key figure in the creation of the United States. Just as boldly, the cast was almost entirely Black or Latino, with Miranda portraying Hamilton, Leslie Odom, Jr. as his foil (and eventual killer) Aaron Burr, plus star turns from Christopher Jackson (as George Washington), Daveed Diggs (as Thomas Jefferson) and Phillipa Soo (as Hamilton’s wife Eliza Schuyler). (The Broadway cast’s token white performer was Jonathan Groff as the haughty King George II.) Taken as an outburst of multicultural optimism in the twilight of Barack Obama’s presidency, Hamilton was acclaimed on a level seen by few Broadway musicals. The show won 11 Tony Awards (including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score) as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. (Its 16 nominations set a Tony record, but Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan’s The Producers still holds the record for wins, with 12.)  The show remains a hot ticket on Broadway, even while the original cast filmed a production that can be viewed on the Disney+ streaming service.

Seeing that the roots of Hamilton owed as much to hip-hop and pop as to musical theatre, artists outside of the traditional Broadway ecosystem were quick to embrace Miranda’s eclectic score.  The 2016 release of The Hamilton Mixtape – not coincidentally, the same title under which the musical was originally developed – welcomed such contemporary artists as The Roots, Usher, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Andra Day, Kelly Clarkson, Ben Folds, Regina Spektor, and John Legend to reinterpret Hamilton‘s songs.

But that wasn’t all Miranda had in mind.  Over the next couple of years, he curated a series of digital Hamildrops on which his friends and fans contributed new recordings of music from and inspired by Hamilton.  “Weird Al” Yankovic served up a delightful polka (of course, he did!) of the musical’s tunes.  Dear Evan Hansen star Ben Platt and that show’s composer-lyricist team of Justin Paul and Benj Pasek teamed with Miranda for a Hamilton/Hansen mashup, “Found/Tonight.”  Indie rock darlings The Decemberists joined with Miranda to reinvent a discarded lyric as “Ben Franklin’s Song.”  Sara Bareilles brought to life a reprise of “Dear Theodosia” which had been cut from the final Hamilton score.  Miranda teamed with Broadway legend John Kander to pen a new anthem, the rousing “Cheering for Me Now,” which Miranda and Kander later wove into their musical stage adaptation of New York, New York. Even President Barack Obama got into the act, reciting George Washington’s 1796 farewell address on “One Last Time (44 Remix),” featuring original Hamilton star Christopher Jackson and gospel great BeBe Winans.   The Hamildrops weren’t collected on a digital album until 2025, and now, they make their physical debut within this collection.
