Twenty years after it became a worldwide blockbuster – and more than 15 years since her passing broke the hearts of fans everywhere – Amy Winehouse’s final album will be reissued with a host of bonus material, including unheard demos and an unreleased live set.

UMe will reissue 2006’s Back to Black on October 23 (the Friday before its official anniversary on October 27) in a variety of formats, most notably 3CD and 3LP sets packed with more than two dozen bonus tracks. (In a coup for CD buyers, five B-sides and three live cuts will not be on the 3LP set, which is pressed on clear vinyl.) Additional pressings of the original album will be available, including a new Amazon-exclusive CD with an alternate cover (curiously lacking the bonus remix of “You Know I’m No Good” featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah, which was on original U.S. pressings and is on the deluxe CD set’s bonus disc of studio tracks) as well as zoetrope and “chalkboard marble” color variants. Alongside the four unheard demos and a live show recorded on the Back to Black tour in Amsterdam in 2007, the package will feature unseen photos from Mischa Richter and Alex Lake (including another alternate image on the album’s cover) and new liner notes from the album’s producers, Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson. (Ronson has also shared some handwritten lyrics by Winehouse for the booklet.)

While U.K. native Winehouse’s 2003 debut Frank made overtures to establish her as a unique new talent – her combination of vintage jazz/soul styles with raw, honest lyricism won the album an Ivor Novello Award – it was Back to Black that made her a superstar. Working with one of Frank‘s primary producers, Salaam Remi (best known at the time for producing the Fugees’ “Fu-Gee-La”), as well as Mark Ronson (a wunderkind New York DJ and stepson of Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones), Winehouse’s songs became even more confessional and grimily indebted to cratedigging neo-soul. (Ronson employed Sharon Jones’ retro-soul group The Dap-Kings to back Winehouse on the tracks he produced.) Inspired by her rocky relationship with future/former husband Blake Fielder-Civil and her well-documented substance abuse issues, Back to Black was a portrait of resilience through heartache and poor decisions, with standout tracks like singles “You Know I’m No Good,” “Tears Dry on Their Own,” the title track and iconic opener “Rehab” – all delivered in that smoky, singular voice of hers.

Back to Black was not only a smash at home, shooting straight to the top of the U.K. charts and sending “Rehab” and “Back to Black” to the Top 10, but it turned Winehouse into an icon outside of England. A striking presence in cat-eye makeup and black hair piled in a beehive atop her short frame, Back to Black reached No. 2 in America while “Rehab” reached No. 9. At the Grammys in 2008 – an event she performed at in London via satellite after being unable to secure a visa in time – she took home five trophies, including Best New Artist and both Song and Record of the Year for “Rehab.” (Her reaction to the latter remains one of the most moving moments in the ceremony’s history.)

While the last four years of Winehouse’s life were framed in triumph and tragedy – her final recording was a stunning duet with Tony Bennett on “Body and Soul,” cut exactly four months before she died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 at the age of 27 – the expanded Back to Black will rightfully remind fans of all stripes just what a talent she was.
