In Other Words: “Sinatra at the Sands” 60th Anniversary Celebrated with New 5CD Box Set, Remixed LP

“How did all these people get in my room?”  Frank Sinatra quipped when he strode onstage at The Sands’ Copa Room in January 1966 for his sold-out concerts, but, in truth, there was no doubt that it was Sinatra’s room.  Las Vegas was his kind of town.  Supported by Count Basie and His Orchestra under the baton of arranger-conductor Quincy Jones, the Chairman of the Board – who had recently turned 50 years old and entered the September of his years, was in his element.  His electrifying shows were preserved on his very first live album, Sinatra at the Sands.  The original double LP set was released on his label, Reprise Records, in July ’66 and rose to No. 9 on the Billboard 200.  It also reached the top ten across the pond in Great Britain.  Over the years, it’s received various reissues including a slightly-expanded 1998 CD reissue as part of the Entertainer of the Century series and a 2003 DVD-Audio release premiering Elliot Mazer’s surround mix of the expanded album.

Now, on October 23, Frank Sinatra Enterprises and Capitol/UMe are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the original Sinatra at the Sands with a new campaign encompassing a 2LP remixed reissue of the album, a 5CD box set premiering five previously unreleased concerts from the Sands “residency,” and digital versions including a Dolby Atmos mix of both releases.  (The Atmos mix is not included within the physical package.)

The 2LP 180-gram “Vinylphyle” presentation has been newly mixed by longtime FSE engineer Larry Walsh and mastered by Joe Nino-Hernes at Sterling Sound.  The package replicates the original gatefold jacket with Stan Cornyn’s Grammy-winning liner notes; it also includes an insert with new notes by FSE’s Charles Pignone and previously unpublished photos from the concerts.

The main attraction for CD fans and collectors alike will be the 5CD box.  Whereas the original album’s performances were culled from various nights at the Copa Room, the box set premieres five complete, previously unreleased shows from the January 26 to February 1, 1966 run:

  • January 26, 1966 (Second Show);
  • January 27, 1966 (First Show);
  • January 28, 1966 (First Show);
  • January 29. 1966 (First Show); and
  • February 1, 1966 (Second Show).

In addition, the set includes two bonus tracks, Matt Dennis and Earl K. Brent’s “Angel Eyes” and Rodgers and Hart’s “Where or When,” from the second show of January 28, 1966.  (That show was included in full on the 2018 Standing Room Only(opens in new tab) box set, hence its lack of appearance here.)

Onstage at The Sands for two shows nightly (8:15 and midnight!), Sinatra was in full command of the stage, sympathetically supported by Quincy Jones’ sizzling arrangements and dynamic conducting as well as Bill Miller and Count Basie on piano.  (Sinatra and Basie had previously collaborated on 1962’s Sinatra-Basie and 1964’s It Might as Well Be Swing, the latter with Quincy Jones.)  They tore through a tight set including longtime favorites (the opening “Come Fly with Me,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “You Make Me Feel So Young”) and more recent Reprise-era tunes (“The September of My Years,” “It Was a Very Good Year,” “My Kind of Town,” “Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words)”) as well as surprises such as the My Fair Lady showstopper “Get Me to the Church on Time.”  Though the Basie band could swing like no other, the varied set found room for tenderness, irreverence, and intimacy, too.  The Count and co. stepped out for their own smoking performances, too, of “One O’Clock Jump,” “All of Me,” and “Makin’ Whoopee.”

The 5CD set is housed in a digipak with a new cover inspired by the original poster for the residency.  Pignone’s notes are reprised here alongside quotes from band personnel and those who attended the shows, as well as rare photos of Sinatra, Basie, and Jones.  The Sands shows captured a special moment in time for Sinatra, kicking off what would become an auspicious year in high style; in July, he would score a No. 1 hit with “Strangers in the Night.”  It was his first chart-topper at Reprise, and he would earn a second one the next year duetting with daughter Nancy on “Somethin’ Stupid.”

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray.

Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.

    Has anyone tracked which actual shows each track on the original Sinatra at the Sands lp and cd were from? It looks like the time stamps don’t really match the time stamps on the new ‘unreleased’ shows. I was just curious if anyone had tracked origins of the original compilation set.
