50 years ago, Gainesville, Florida native Tom Petty formed the group that would take him and his bandmates into the stratosphere.  Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers blazed a path of rootsy rock and roll for over forty years, curtailed only by Petty’s untimely passing in 2017 at the age of 66.  Now, UMe is celebrating the birth of the legendary band with Origins 1971-1978, a new 4CD/1DVD/1BD or 5LP/1DVD/1BD box set.   (An “Uber Deluxe” vinyl edition limited to just 500 copies will also be available.)  The set shines a spotlight on the period that led to the formation of the Heartbreakers as well as their earliest years including collaborations with the illustrious likes of Al Kooper, Leon Russell, and Emory Gordy as they explored various sounds and styles.  Today’s announcement coincides with tonight’s Americana Awards.  Founding members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair will open the show with Chris Stapleton, while later Heartbreakers Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston will join for a final song.

The set opens with No Sleep Til L.A., which will be also available as a standalone LP, CD, and limited-edition Zoetrope vinyl LP.   Its twelve songs chronicle the period between Mudcrutch’s earliest recordings and the founding of the Heartbreakers, with recordings made in Miami, Tulsa, and Los Angeles.  Seven of its twelve tracks are previously unreleased while the remaining five songs have been newly remixed.  The single, 1978’s “Parade of Loons,” is streaming now and also is the basis of a music video starring Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage, directed by Peter Sluszka.

The set then continues with longtime Petty associate Ryan Ulyate’s new remixes of the band’s 1976 self-titled debut album (featuring “American Girl” and “Breakdown”) and their 1978 follow-up, You’re Gonna Get It! (with “I Need to Know” and “Listen to Her Heart”).  On these albums, Petty and the Heartbreakers synthesized rock, pop, and R&B textures into a sound recognizably their own.  Some of the tracks have been extended by Ulyate by restoring material from the original tapes.

Live from the Record Plant 1977 revisits an oft-bootlegged radio broadcast in its entirety for the first time.  The show was recorded for San Francisco’s KSAN-FM at Sausalito’s Record Plant and boasts a guest appearance by Al Kooper.  The Cut-Out Bin samples a further five tracks from the solo Petty working with session musicians; one tune (described in the press release as a “yacht rock track”) features Leon Russell.  “Cry to Me,” its lone previously released cut, has been remixed here.

The box continues with the Heartbreakers’ 1978 performance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test on DVD. The audio has been restored by Ryan Ulyate and is now released for the first time in high definition. Renowned BBC presenter “Whispering” Bob Harris has contributed his memories for the booklet, writing, “[It was] one of the greatest performances we had ever seen by a band at the top of their game. They played music from another planet to a room packed with manic fans, in one of the most iconic venues in the world. It was an experience so powerful that five decades later we could still remember every chord, every song, every solo.”  The box set’s concluding Blu-ray Audio Disc contains all 51 songs in high-resolution stereo, Dolby Atmos, and 5.1 surround.

The vinyl editions contain an 88-page fanzine-styled booklet with liner notes by David Fricke and Bud Scoppa, track-by-track annotations with commentary from the band members, complete album credits, and numerous photos and memorabilia images.  (The CD appears to include a version of the fanzine, too.)
