Just When You Thought It Was Safe…Intrada Delivers ‘JAWS 2,’ ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reissues

Intrada (hopefully) kicks off a robust fall for soundtrack collectors with the recent unveiling of two projects from the Universal Studios library released in 1978: one offering a box set of beloved sci-fi TV music, the other presenting a new release of a legendary composer’s first score for a sequel (the predecessor of which earned him an Oscar).

Up first is that pretty fracking cool box set: Battlestar Galactica (The Classic Series Soundtrack Collection), an 8CD anthology featuring new presentations of the best of Stu Phillips’ long-unavailable music from the heroic outer space drama. Created by TV impresario Glen A. Larson (who executive produced The Six Million Dollar Man and wrote one of its TV movie pilots), Galactica told the story of the titular capital ship of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind, locked in a war with the robotic Cylons and engaged in a search for another colony on a distant planet known as Earth.

With a cast anchored by Lorne Greene as Commander Adama and Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict as the swashbucklers Captain Apollo and Lieutenant Starbuck, Battlestar Galactica was certainly in conversation with the preceding year’s cinematic titan Star Wars. 20th Century-Fox and Universal engaged in legal skirmishes over whether or not the show was too close to George Lucas’ space saga, while Lucasfilm nearly took special effects company Apogee (founded by Jon Dykstra, who’d supervised Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic effects team on Star Wars) to task over the equipment they used to create the shots of ships in the series’ unprecedented $8 million pilot. (Tensions also arose when Mattel’s Galactica toys, which shot plastic projectiles, grievously injured several children; competitor Kenner, who licensed Star Wars action figures, infamously scrapped a missile-launching figure of Boba Fett meant to preview Star Wars sequel The Empire Strikes Back years before its release.)

Despite strong ratings early on, Galactica proved to be an expensive show and was canceled after only one season. With Greene and few other returning cast members, Larson attempted a low-budget sequel show the following year, showing the crew relocating to Earth, but Galactica 1980 never made it past 10 episodes. Nonetheless, the show remained popular, as first an attraction on Universal Studios’ tour and then in the early 21st century, when Star Trek: The Next Generation writer Ronald D. Moore oversaw an acclaimed reboot of the show that ran for nearly a decade on cable’s Sci-Fi Channel.

If critics and fans could initially agree on one thing about the original Galactica, it was Stu Phillips’ tremendous music – a blend of stirring, action-packed symphonic material recorded by top-flight orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Phillips, a former A&R man for Colpix and favorite of Larson who’d score The Six Million Dollar Man, The Fall Guy and Knight Rider (perhaps the composer’s most famous work), was in fine form then and now – at 97 years old, he remains active and openly grateful for Intrada’s work on this set. And it’s no mere reissue of the label’s four volumes of Galactica material put out in 2011 and 2012. For this box, producer/engineer Mike Matessino conducted a search and retrieval of scoring elements in the Universal vaults, newly restoring everything and bringing it up to higher technical and artistic standards (including correcting errantly-pitched cues and debuting some 86 minutes of unreleased music). The package also kicks off with a fresh remaster of the original MCA soundtrack album that accompanied the TV movie pilot’s release in 1978, along with rare extras from the vaults (including single releases and even an arrangement of Galactica material by Phillips performed for a Boston Pops record with John Williams as conductor).

A formidable team has worked to put the box together. Joe Sikoryak designed the glossy cardboard box that holds five jewel cases and a 52-page book of liner notes, including rare photos, a foreword from Matessino and extensive commentary from writer John Takis. The booklet cover features new art by Paul Shipper, while Stephane Coedel contributes to the individual jewel case designs (including a “flipper” cover for the original soundtrack that utilizes the original art and features vintage notes from Larson and Phillips in its insert). Kay Marshall has art directed the package overall.

JAWS 2 Intrada
BUY NOW FROM INTRADA

After last year’s 50th anniversary bonanza for the score to JAWS at Intrada, one good bite deserves another! The label will reissue the out-of-print score for JAWS 2, the unlikely 1978 sequel to Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece. (Spielberg, of course, did not return, and French director Jeannot Szwarc assumed directorial responsibilities.) Once again, Amity Island contends with a great white shark problem – only this time, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) is mostly on his own against the beast, racing against the clock to rescue a marooned group of teen sailors that includes his children. Intriguingly, JAWS 2 was the first time John Williams scored a sequel, and instead of simply reprising his own work, he brings the iconic shark theme back alongside a set of new, occasionally complex thematic ideas that have made this score a dark-horse favorite in The Maestro’s filmography.

Once again, Matessino – Williams’ go-to archivist/restoration expert – has worked his magic on a new and improved mix of JAWS 2. While Intrada’s 2015 release was sourced from three-track mixdowns, a vault search at Universal Music Group has yielded the original 16-track scoring masters to build not only a brand-new presentation of this release (with a small helping of additional music not on the last set) but a new remix and reconstruction of the original 1978 soundtrack LP, available on the second CD of this 2CD set and to be released digitally this weekend (with participating services also making the album available in a new Dolby Atmos mix by Steve Genewick). Matessino has written new notes about the technical assembly of this set, while the booklet also includes an update of the original 2015 notes by Scott Bettencourt.

Both titles are available to order directly from Intrada. Those links, and full track lists, are presented below.
