How Long I Have Waited: Diana Krall Revisits “The Look of Love” For 25th Anniversary

Diana Krall’s sixth studio album, The Look of Love, first hit stores 25 years ago on September 18, 2001.  Now, the Grammy Award-winning album is returning from Verve/UMe on November 20 in an expanded edition on CD and digitally.  On the same date, a One-Step vinyl edition will also be released.

The Canadian chanteuse-pianist reteamed with her longtime producer Tommy LiPuma and renowned arranger Claus Ogerman (Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sammy’s Back on Broadway) for The Look of Love.  The London Symphony Orchestra was joined by such notable musicians as guitarists Dori Caymmi and John Pisano, bassist Christian McBride, and percussionist Paulinho da Costa for an album of classic standards.  Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s sensual “The Look of Love” joined compositions by Arthur Hamilton (“Cry Me a River”), the Gershwins (“’S Wonderful”), Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz (“Dancing in the Dark”), and Matt Dennis and Tom Adair (“The Night We Called It a Day”), all rendered in lush yet smoky style.

The upcoming edition adds two bonus tracks originally released on a Target exclusive (seasonal favorite “The Man with the Bag” and Krall’s own song “Charmed Life”) as well as three more bonus cuts, at least two of which appeared on the Australasian tour bonus disc (the Gershwins’ “But Not for Me,” Peggy Lee’s “I Love Being Here with You,” and a live recording of the album’s “Maybe You’ll Be There”).  The latter song is noted as an “Alternate Take” on the upcoming edition, so it’s unclear whether this is the same live recording as on the Australasian bonus disc.  (“I Love Being Here with You” will only be available digitally via iTunes/Apple Music.)

The Look of Love (25th Anniversary Edition) will be available on CD, as well as a limited-edition One-Step vinyl pressing of the original 10-track album.  Each pressing of the One-Step edition is numbered and housed in a gatefold, tip-on jacket within a slipcase.

Diana Krall and Claus Ogerman reunited in 2009 for Quiet Nights, featuring standards, bossa nova, and another Bacharach/David favorite (“Walk on By”).  Since The Look of Love, though, Diana Krall has pursued various musical paths including original songs (The Girl in the Other Room, co-written with her husband, Elvis Costello), 1920s/1930s jazz rarities (the T Bone Burnett-produced Glad Rag Doll), and pop-rock (Wallflower, helmed by David Foster).  Her most recent studio album, 2020’s This Dream of You, was titled after a Bob Dylan track and returned Krall and LiPuma to the standards milieu via songs by Irving Berlin, Vernon Duke, Lerner and Loewe, and others.

The Look of Love (25th Anniversary Edition) hits stores on November 20. You’ll find the track listing and pre-order links below.  (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.)
