Band (Still) on the Run: McCartney Reissue Set for November, Tracks Revealed

Fans of Paul McCartney are going to have to wait just a little bit longer for Concord to kick off its catalogue reissue campaign, as the remastered editions of Band on the Run have been pushed back from September 28 to November 2, a little less than a month after EMI’s massive batch of John Lennon reissues drop.

Concord has been keeping all information pertaining to this release close to the vest, but details have finally emerged. The 1973 classic by McCartney and Wings (his fifth solo release and the band's third album) will be available in three configurations: a standard remaster (dropping "Helen Wheels" to retain the original UK track lineup) with a list price of $14.98, a 2-CD/1-DVD special edition retailing for $29.98, and (as seems to be the record labels’ wont these days) a super-deluxe 3-CD/1-DVD box set containing a lavish book and other goodies, with a price tag of $99.98. The DVD has some exciting content, including the full 1974 documentary One Hand Clapping filmed at Abbey Road in August of that year, directed by David Litchfield and featuring live studio performances. Some fans will be relieved to know that the only additional musical content in the 3-CD/1-DVD box is a CD containing the exact contents of the 25th Anniversary Edition's "audio documentary" second disc, albeit in remastered form.  Finally, a vinyl pressing will also be available.

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. In 2015, Joe formed the Second Disc Records label. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray. Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.

  1. I gotta say, dropping "Helen Wheels" just to match the UK pressing, when I'm used to it being on the album as it was here in the States is NOT an enticement. OK, it's on the second disc. Fine, I guess... But what's with the other tracks on Disc 2? Alternate takes, demos, what exactly?

    I'd love to see the DVD that comes with the deluxe set, but not at the price they're asking for it. Unless the two disc version is something really special, I'll stick with my old, single CD version.

    • Other than the "Helen Wheels"/"Country Dreamer" and "Zoo Gang" singles, the tracks on the second CD all are drawn from the documentary "One Hand Clapping." The documentary itself is on the DVD, which is available in the $29.98 edition, not just the ultra-deluxe (and ultra-expensive!) box.

      One suspects Paul is holding the outtakes/demos for a box set somewhere down the road...

  2. Ah, I missed that originally... That's what I get for skipping over the details. Sorry, Joe!

    So, given that the DVD comes with the two-disc set, this means a third CD and a book costs $70 more? A third CD that, according to your article, was previously released?

    The outtakes/demos being held for a boxed set seems likely, although I hope Paul doesn't wait too long. It's bad enough that so much Beatles stuff is being sat on (the Let It Be movie, Yellow Submarine no longer available on DVD, stuff like the Shea Stadium concert, promo videos for a number of songs, etc.)!

    • It seems that a certain number of folks are willing to pay upwards of $100 for all of the bells and whistles, so at least we can give kudos to Concord for making all of the new content available in less expensive editions.

      I wish David Bowie's camp had taken a cue for the upcoming "Station to Station," where significant amounts of new material (including the much-coveted 5.1 mix) are only available in the most expensive edition.
