A heads-up to soundtrack enthusiasts who read The Second Disc: this week is your week. No less than three of the major indie labels will be releasing product this week; tonight we will see two new titles from Intrada (one of which is more or less confirmed to be an unlimited deluxe edition of Jerry Goldsmith's score to First Blood), and La La Land will announce four titles on Black Friday.
This morning, though, Varese Sarabande released their final batch of CD Club titles for the year. And they're stunning. Come on in after the jump to take a look.Let's get the super-hyped news out of the way: the first title in the batch is the premiere release of the score to the suspenseful black comedy Family Plot (1976). This is a monumental release for several reasons - it is the final film from legendary director Alfred Hitchcock, and his only collaboration with John Williams, who crafted a score full of whimsical adventure. (Williams would later explore similar styles of writing on films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Home Alone (1990) and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001).) Only the end credits suite had been released before, so this is a massive payload from the vaults. Family Plot is limited to 5,000 copies and will likely go fast.
Next up is the score to Taps (1981), composed by Maurice Jarre. The film was a serious drama about a group of cadets fortifying their beloved military against the outside world in an attempt to save it from real estate developers. Timothy Hutton starred as the leader of the cadets, whose ranks included up-and-coming actors Sean Penn and Tom Cruise. This premiere release is limited to 1,200 copies.
Fans who were intrigued by The Second Disc's recent Friday Feature on the music of The Karate Kid (1984) have a reason to get excited: Varese represses the first film's score, as composed by Bill Conti. This disc was previously only available as part of Varese's sold-out box set of all four Karate Kid scores. This soundtrack will see a 2,000 copy run.
Finally, another score from the collaborating team of Pino Donaggio for director Brian DePalma (whose first effort, Carrie (1976), was just expanded and re-released by Kritzerland last week). Home Movies is an oddball comedy from 1980 starring Keith Gordon as a young man capturing the lives of his unorthodox family on film with inspiration from his mentor (Kirk Douglas). This set tops out at 1,000 copies.
The track listings and cover art for each set is below. If any of these scores excite you, don't hesitate for a moment - when they're gone, they're gone. And keep it here at The Second Disc for more score info all through this week and beyond.
