UPDATE: Marley Versions Aplenty

February 2, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

The release of Live Forever, Bob Marley's last concert on CD, yielded the first retail exclusives for a catalogue title in 2011 - a T-shirt for Target buyers and a bonus disc for Best Buy customers - and we have some more detail about the offerings at each store.

For reasons I can't wrap my head around, Target is also offering a third version of the set - not only the double-disc edition with and without the T-shirt, but a pared-down single-disc version of the album. While the full version of Live Forever, spread across two discs, is in a digipak, this Target-exclusive "highlights" disc is in a jewel case, instead. It's relatively cheap at $7.99 (this week's sale price), but why would anyone want to avoid the extra $4 for the full concert - particularly when so many live archive sets get cut down?

The Best Buy bonus disc, meanwhile, collates five rarer studio tracks found on compilations and deluxe reissues along with an embedded video of an interview with the Marley family. These tracks had previously been released as an iTunes EP, but it's always nice to get these tracks on disc. (Thanks to super-reader Don for the tip!)

The track lists for the amended Live Forever and the Best Buy-exclusive disc are after the jump.

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

The really weird thing is that the Target box set with the T-shirt includes the edited "Highlights" CD, NOT the full 2-CD concert version!!!! WTF? If you're an uber-Marley fan willing to pony up for the T-shirt, wouldn't you also want the full concert set? This is totally crazy.

The shirt/box version was sold out at my local Target. Wondering if whoever bought them was mad about the lack of full show on the disc therein. I'd spring for Best Buy if I had to pick between the two - I have enough t-shirts as it is.

Notice the highlights disc does not contain either of the subpar sounding final two tracks on the main set?
