Formed in 1969, “space rock” group Hawkwind recorded its debut album in 1970. Forty-five years later, an iteration of the band is still performing, but Parlophone’s U.K. division is turning the clock back with a new box set to celebrate Hawkwind’s earliest years. This Is Your Captain Speaking…Your Captain Is Dead: The Albums and Singles 1970-1974 arrives on March 23 in the U.K. and one week later in the U.S., and brings together the band’s entire United Artists catalogue on 11 CDs in replica sleeves. The set encompasses the following releases: Hawkwind, In Search of Space, Greasy Truckers’ Party (2 CDs), Doremi Fasol Latido (2 CDs), The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London (2 CDs), Hall of the Mountain Grill, and The 1999 Party (2CDs) plus a bonus disc of single versions and mixes, Of Time and Stars – The Singles.
Hawkwind, In Search of Space, Doremi Fasol Latido and Hall of the Mountain Grill are all newly-remastered. Also, note that Greasy Truckers’ Party was the name of a 1972 various-artists album also featuring Brinsley Schwarz, Man and Magic Michael; two Hawkwind tracks were included on the original LP. In 2007, the album was expanded into a 3-CD box set featuring the band’s full set in newly-mixed form. That sequence is reprised here, along with the original LP mixes of the original two tracks. Fifteen rare tracks are featured on Of Time and Stars, making in total for a comprehensive chronicle of Hawkwind’s UA period.
One week later, on March 30 in the U.K., Universal U.K. releases Nothing More: The Collected Fotheringay. Sandy Denny formed Fotheringay in 1970 upon her exit from Fairport Convention, and although the folk-rock quintet formed of Denny, Gerry Conway, Trevor Lucas, Jerry Donahue and Pat Donaldson released just one album during their time together, further recordings surfaced in the ensuing years. This 3-CD/1-DVD box looks to be the most comprehensive collection yet of the memorable music the group left behind.
Nothing More, as the title might indicate, brings together original album tracks, demos, alternate takes, previously unreleased live recordings and, for the first time, the official release of the seven existing tracks which Fotheringay recorded in session for BBC radio. The final disc, a DVD, has the four songs recorded by the group for German TV show Beat Club, effectively doubling the existing footage of Sandy Denny in performance. Two of the songs included here, “Nothing More” and “John the Gun,” weren’t even broadcast originally. This hardcover book-style box also features rare and previously unseen photographs of the band plus previously unseen original sketches by Marion Appleton, Trevor Lucas’s sister.
Finally, on April 27 in the U.K. (and the obligatory “one week later in the U.S.”), Universal U.K. has another offering: a 9-CD collection of the Island Records albums recorded by English group Spooky Tooth. The Gary Wright-led band got its start when Wright joined the band Art (formerly The V.I.P.s) following the release of their album Supernatural Fairy Tales; renamed Spooky Tooth, the group debuted with 1968’s It’s All About and with some lineup changes, recorded through 1974 and The Mirror.
The Island Years: An Anthology 1967-1974 contains the band’s complete original albums (a reunion effort, sans Gary Wright, arrived in 1999) – most in expanded editions - plus Supernatural Fairy Tales and a never-before-released April 1972 concert. In total, the box boasts more than 30 previously unissued tracks. In addition to the CD box set, The Island Years will also be released on vinyl. The vinyl iteration presents straight reissues of the eight proper albums in replica original packaging. It also includes a full-size repro of Art’s Island promotional poster (designed by psychedelic artists Hapshash and the Coloured Coat) and a download card entitling the purchaser to all the tracks, including the CD version’s bonus tracks and live concert.
All three of these box sets can be pre-ordered at the links below!

Pierre Coach says
Hi, interesting Spooky Tooth discography. This morning I heard a live version of I'm alive-the mirror on FM (CHOM in Montreal) and the recording sounded damn good. I've spent a lot of time looking for this in CD or DVD format but I just can't find it. If I heard this on the radio it must exist somewhere and yes I'm sure it was live since it was different from my CD (studio recording) and also the display in the car mentioned ''live''. Where can I find this? Best Regards, Pierre
