The Smiths' The Queen is Dead--a towering album of '80s British rock and arguably the definitive statement by the Manchester band--will be reissued and expanded October 20.

Produced by frontman Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr with assistance from engineer Stephen Street, The Queen is Dead has become quintessential Smiths: packed with biting, witty lyrics and catchy, densely layered instrumental hooks (thanks not only to Marr but bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce). While Morrissey and Marr have both proclaimed Strangeways, Here We Come (1987) to be their favorite of their albums, The Queen is Dead has taken on a mythic status among critics and fans. NME named it the greatest of all time in 2013, and it rested on the U.K. charts for 22 weeks, reaching No. 2 and ultimately going platinum (the only Smiths studio album to do so). In America, where the band were stalwarts of the alternative "college rock" scene, Queen reigned too, becoming one of three Smiths titles to go gold and winning over critics like Robert Christgau and publications like Rolling Stone (who said of Morrissey, "Like it or not, this guy's going to be around for a while") and Pitchfork (who named it the sixth greatest album of the '80s in 2002).

In a statement to promote the reissue, Morrissey himself said of the album, "You cannot continue to record and simply hope that your audience will approve, or that average critics will approve, or that radio will approve. You progress only when you wonder if an abnormally scientific genius would approve--and this is the leap The Smiths took with The Queen is Dead." In the same release, Marr simply stated the album "was epic to make and epic to live."

In one of his missives to fans in 2016, Morrissey bemoaned the lack of attention to the 30th anniversary of The Queen is Dead, although a single of outtakes from the sessions was later made available, as well as a commemorative single of the title track. Now, those wounds are healed with a 3CD/DVD deluxe edition packed with rarities. Included in the set are:

• The original album, newly remastered this year (as-yet unconfirmed as to by who, though Marr oversaw previous mastering in 2011)
• A bonus disc featuring nine demos and outtakes from the album sessions (only one of which has previously been issued) as well as the four B-sides from singles "The Boy with the Thorn In His Side" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again," all newly remastered (it is unknown whether this disc finally replicates the segue between "Rubber Ring" and "Asleep" heard only on the original "Thorn" single)
• An unreleased show recorded in Boston less than two months after the album's release
• A DVD featuring not only the album in hi-resolution stereo but Derek Jarman's The Queen is Dead short film, featuring the title track, non-LP single "Panic" and "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" as soundtrack

All deluxe versions are packed in a lidded box with 12-page booklet (the vinyl box features all the audio content on five LPs, packed in two gatefold jackets and one single). The cover art now features a slightly alternate frame of Alan Delain from the 1964 French noir film L'Insoumis. For the curious, one of the bonus tracks, the first take of the yearning "There is a Light That Never Goes Out," is now streaming.
