Intervention Records, the eclectic label behind splendid and sonically-pristine reissues for artists ranging from Joe Jackson to Billy Squier, has announced the next title in its (Re)Discover Series: Gene Clark's 1971 A&M Records classic, White Light. A stereo hybrid SACD (playable on all CD players) is due from the label on June 29, while the 180-gram vinyl release is due in September.
The singer-songwriter and Byrds co-founder launched his solo career in 1967 on Columbia with Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers, on which he was joined by the duo of Vern and Rex Gosdin. After a brief rapprochement with his band, Clark migrated from the Byrds' home of Columbia to A&M Records, where he released two collaborative albums with banjo great Doug Dillard. His next solo project (and his first without a credited co-headliner) was White Light.
Native American guitarist Jesse Ed Davis helmed White Light and also provided its primary accompaniment on his slide guitar. The intimate, introspective, and raw collection of original songs by Clark (and one co-write with Davis) was supplemented by one outside composition: Bob Dylan and Richard Manuel's "Tears of Rage." For his part, Dylan was quoted in Rolling Stone offering fulsome praise for Clark's "For a Spanish Guitar": "(It's) something I or anybody else would have been proud to have written."
Though it was hailed in the Netherlands, White Light wasn't met at home with commercial success. Its cult reputation has only grown over the years, however, much like Clark's other solo work. In late 1972, he left A&M to briefly reunite with The Byrds at Asylum Records. Intervention's vinyl reissue of White Light has been 100% analog mastered by Kevin Gray at CoHEARent Audio from the best source available: pristine 1/2" safety copies of the original stereo master tapes.
For the LP, the original album artwork has been restored by Intervention's Tom Vadakan and housed in a film-laminated, Old Style "tip-on" jacket printed by Stoughton. The hybrid SACD will be housed in a Super Jewel Box. Look for White Light on hybrid SACD next week, and on 180-gram deluxe vinyl in September!
