Are you in the market for Laurel Canyon-inspired power-pop? How about early '70s funk? Or maybe glam rock from the turn of the millennium is more your speed. Real Gone Music has you covered with new vinyl reissues due this December.
This slate kicks off on December 4 with the vinyl debut of Spacehog's The Chinese Album. Fresh off the reissue of the band's debut Resident Alien for RSD, Real Gone now turns to the follow-up, which sees them pulling from power-pop and glam influences and features an appearance by Michael Stipe from R.E.M. too. Though the album may not have been met with the same sales as their first effort, The Chinese Album remains a cult favorite among '90s rock enthusiasts. For its vinyl debut, the album will be pressed on maroon-hued vinyl, complete with a 4-page insert including all the graphics from its original CD issue. This pressing will be limited to only 1,000 copies.
On the same day, Real Gone will reissue Sweetheart of the Sun, the final album to date by The Bangles. The 2011 album saw Susanna Hoffs and Debbie & Vicki Peterson team up with Matthew Sweet, who produced the effort. Together, they take a look back at the sound of the Laurel Canyon scene of the '60s and '70s, with the same inspired harmonies and perky arrangements that became their signature. The album consisted almost entirely of original songs in that mold save for a couple of covers including Todd Rundgren's early Nazz favorite "Open My Eyes." With original copies hard to find, this fully licensed reissue on purple and pink swirl vinyl - which is limited to just 900 copies - is sure to delight any fan and vinyl aficionado.
The following week, on December 11, Kool and the Gang's 1970 self-titled debut will arrive on cream-colored vinyl. It would be a few years before the band grace the heights of the Billboard charts with their disco smashes, but with an infectious blend of R&B and funk with plenty of horns and irresistible beats, this sampler's favorite sees them beginning their ascent as a leading dance music band. Kool and The Gang will be pressed up in a limited edition of 1,250 copies, so be sure to grab your copy quick!
