This winter, Edsel will continue its long association with the Dead or Alive catalogue with a new deluxe edition of the band's 1985 breakthrough Youthquake, to be reissued February 21 for its 40th anniversary. The 4CD set (in double gatefold packaging with an O-ring joining the two) collects a new remaster of the album, 18 remixes (including a whole disc devoted to period and latter-day versions of hit single "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" and a live set taken from two nights at London's Hammersmith Odeon in the summer of 1985.
Though Dead or Alive's debut album, 1984's Sophisticated Boom Boom, featured a full-band dance-pop sound, the band's androgynous frontman Pete Burns wanted to push their sonic boundaries even further on Youthquake. To that end, he recruited the nascent production team of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman to join him and bandmates Mike Percy, Tim Lever and Steve Coy in the studio. While the sessions were reportedly high-pressure - engineer Phil Harding claimed they occasionally gave way to physical altercations - and label Epic Records was reportedly unenthusiastic about the results, Youthquake became one of the year's bigger dance floor smashes. The clattering electronics of high-energy lead single "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" were impossible to miss on radio waves and club speakers, along with an eye-catching video that featured Burns with long hair, angular makeup, silk kimonos and an eyepatch. The single topped the U.K. charts and reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America; British audiences took three more songs from the album to the Top 40: "Lover Come Back to Me," "In Too Deep" and "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor)."
While many of the bonus remixes were included on previous Edsel mega-sets devoted to the group, the draw for fans here is a more accessible release of a live show from the Youthquake tour, recorded over two nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on July 6 and 7, 1985 and included in 2016's Sophisticated Boom Box. Several tracks were released that year as single B-sides, but the other nine - including versions of "You Spin Me Round," "My Heart Goes Bang" and "Lover Come Back to Me" (the first two of which, along with "In Too Deep," were repeated for the encore) - made their debut in this recording.
Compiled in memory of both Burns and drummer Steve Coy, who died in 2016 and 2018, Edsel and Youthquake are ready to spin you right round once more. It can be pre-ordered at the links below ahead of its February 21 release; as an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Larry Davis says
All good, all great, but that live show was featured in 2016's massive "Sophisticated Boom Box", as are most of the mixes...so as far as i know, i dont need this set...but some/many might..."Youthquake" is one of the greatest albums of, if not the 80s, of all time...
Mike Duquette says
Indeed - we've updated the post to reflect that. (I remember the 'Sophisticated Boom Box' rollout being kind of disastrous - a lot of pressing issues and things like that, all of which were fixed on a subsequent editon.
