Michelle Phillips Victim of Romance

We've filled you in about some of Real Gone Music's releases for June, including releases from Cheap Trick and The Quick, but now we've got word of a couple of more, this time from "Mama" Michelle Phillips and Keely Smith, both due June 1. The first is a reissue of Michelle Phillips' one and only solo album from 1977: Victim of Romance.  This new edition features liner notes by our very own Joe Marchese.  After the break-up of The Mamas & The Papas, Cass Elliott, Denny Doherty and John

Lee Hazlewood Shazam

The title of Ace's new entry in its Songwriter Series - Shazam! - doesn't refer to Captain Marvel's magic word or Gomer Pyle's favorite expression.  Rather, the new compilation CD is titled after Duane Eddy's (naturally) twangy western gallop "Shazam!" penned by Eddy and maverick producer Lee Hazlewood and released in 1960.  (Okay, Duane and Lee likely did take its name from C.C. Beck and Bill Parker's popular comic book superhero!)  Shazam! and Other Instrumentals Written by Lee Hazlewood is

Paris Sisters Always Heavenly

The story of Albeth, Priscilla and Sherrell Paris - a.k.a. The Paris Sisters - has always been inextricably intertwined with that of Phil Spector.  After all, the producer had one of his earliest hits in 1961 with "I Love How You Love Me," written by Barry Mann and Larry Kolber and sung in soft, demure fashion by Priscilla with her sisters on sweet backgrounds.  But The Paris Sisters' career encompassed far more than just that Top 5 hit.  Their story is filled with other names as illustrious as

Cruising SACD

Director William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) was never one to shy away from controversy. And so was the case with his 1980 film Cruising. Al Pacino starred as NYPD Officer Steve Burns, tasked with tracking down a serial killer targeting gay men.  Inspired by the novel of the same name by New York Times reporter Gerald Walker, Cruising earned largely negative reviews and protests upon its initial release, criticized both for its depiction of the gay community and for lackluster

bad rice

Rare is the "cult album" that actually lives up to its mystique. But rare is Ron Nagle's Bad Rice. This artifact from the Mystery Trend leader and acclaimed ceramic sculptor, originally released on Warner Bros. Records circa 1970, has recently been given new life by Omnivore Recordings in a deluxe 2-CD edition that's an early candidate for Reissue of the Year. One part David Ackles, one part Randy Newman and the rest pure Nagle, Bad Rice likely wasn't helped all those decades ago by its

jack nitzsche 31

The credit “Arranged and conducted by Jack Nitzsche” should be familiar to any collector of those little black vinyl platters we used to call 45s.  Such a credit – or a similar one - graced records by Frankie Laine and Doris Day, The Paris Sisters and The Righteous Brothers, The Tubes and The Crystals, Graham Parker and Bobby Vee.  Jack “Specs” Nitzsche (1973-2000) made his mark across multiple genres and many decades, the common factor being the quality of his work.  Nitzsche the orchestrator
