Out of "Exile," Out of Curiosity

May 19, 2010 By Mike Duquette 10 Comments

Dear readers of The Second Disc: I wonder, for those of you who've purchased the new reissue of Exile on Main St., what you ended up purchasing. Given my, er, "unique" perspective in retail, I've seen what looks like an unusual trend in the purchasing of this big new reissue and I wonder if the same trends are reflected among you.

Take a look at the poll after the jump and please cast your vote. I'm excited to see what everyone has to say!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

I bought the reissue A few months ago, before the re-re-issue was announced. At that time, a single disk version was the only version available. As far as I can tell, there is no real difference between the two. Am I correct on this?

I believe you are. As far as I know the single-disc one is no different from the one released when UMe reissued all the other Stones CDs (which explains the big difference in catalogue numbers between the single-disc and the Deluxe/Rarities Edition).

I'm not a Rolling Stones fan (heresy, I know... sorry!), so I didn't buy this. However, in general I would tend to go with the 2-Disc for a set like this. I usually only buy the "super deluxe" sets for U2 reissues. 🙂 Maybe Rush, too.

Actually, I'd probably go to Best Buy for this one, not because I want the interview disc, but because the 2-disc+interview disc is actually cheaper at BB than just the 2-disc at Target, etc.

Bought the 2 disc version for the bonus tracks, the 1994 album remaster of the original album sounds better than this remaster. this remaster was cut to hot, to much compression. wished their had been more liner notes, got the best buy edition so yhe interview disc was nice

    Mike,
In your poll, you should have made it multiple choice. It would have reflected more accurately the multi-purchases people made with this particular reissue. What I think is going to happen is that Universal will probably gear the Some Girls Deluxe Edition towards this trend. I hope they will do this for Sticky Fingers, Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock N' Roll and Black & Blue. For the record, I bought the following:
    -Super Deluxe Edition
    -Standard Deluxe Edition
-Target Edition with t-shirt & guitar pick
I have also put in for the separate Stones In Exile DVD. In the poll, you might want to also include the Japanese versions of the Exile packages as well.
Anyway, we'll see what the future holds after the Some Girls Deluxe.
    Steve

I could care less about yet another remaster, or a T-Shirt and Guitar Pick, or an interview disc.

So...Target Rarities Edition single disc is for me.

    Mike-

Will you ever tell us about the sales trend you mentioned?

Jeff, all will be revealed (so to speak) in a post later this afternoon.

    Mike,
One option that you should've included in your poll is "the iTunes exclusive" version of "Exile" which adds an alternate take of "All Down The Line".
