Release Round-Up: Week of November 2

November 2, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

Another week, another batch of reissues!

Wings, Band on the Run: Special Edition (Concord)

After reissues of John Lennon's solo catalogue and the Apple Records discography, another Beatles-oriented campaign kicks off with a new reissue of Band on the Run, Paul McCartney and Wings' classic LP. It's the first of his classic discs to be re-released on Concord, and will be available in a wide variety of formats. (Best of all, it's the first drop in the bucket - an insert inside the sets confirms upcoming reissues of more McCartney and Wings sets.) (Official Site)

PinkertonWeezer, Pinkerton: Deluxe Edition / Death to False Metal (Geffen/UMe)

With Weezer no longer a part of the Geffen roster, UMe begins mining the pop-rock band's considerable back catalogue (after a 10th anniversary reissue of the band's 1994 debut). This week brings a similar deluxe edition of 1995's Pinkerton, long thought to be the band's crowning achievement, and a compilation of outtakes, Death to False Metal. (Official Site)

Various Artists, The Sound of Music: 45th Anniversary Edition (RCA/Legacy)

To time with the film's debut on Blu-Ray, Sony reissues The Sound of Music yet again, with a rendition of "My Favorite Things" by Glee star Lea Michele as a bonus track. (Amazon)

Pet Shop Boys, Ultimate Pet Shop Boys (EMI)

A slim, single-disc distillation of the PSB discography, with a new track, "Together." A deluxe edition adds a DVD full of goodies, including all the band's live BBC performances and their acclaimed set at Glastonbury back in June. (Amazon U.K.)

Frank Sinatra, Concert Collection (Shout! Factory)

Seven DVDs of Ol' Blue Eyes for your viewing pleasure - some 14 hours of the Chairman of the Board performing through his entire career on television and elsewhere. What's not to like? (Amazon)

Smokey Robinson, The Solo Albums Volume 2 (Motown/Hip-o Select)

Hip-o Select has done tremendously in terms of revisiting the long-out-of-print Smokey Robinson catalogue (Volume 3 is on its way by the end of the year). This set brings on one disc A Quiet Storm (1975) and the CD debut of Smokey's Family Robinson (1976) along with a non-LP bonus track. (Hip-o Select)

Keith Richards, Vintage Vinos (Mindless)

Keef's late '80s/early '90s solo material is anthologized on this new set, the perfect soundtrack for reading his new memoir. (Amazon)

Black Sabbath, Seventh Star: Deluxe Edition / Eternal Idol: Deluxe Edition (Sanctuary/UMC)

Two latter-day Sabbath albums are expanded in the U.K. with a host of previously unreleased bonus material. Makes you wish Rhino would release this stuff stateside. (Amazon U.K. links #1 and #2)

UB40, Signing Off: Deluxe Edition (EMI/Virgin)

EMI expands the seminal debut album by the British reggae rockers, adding the usual bonus material (single tracks and live recordings for the BBC) and a vintage live show on DVD. (Amazon U.K.)

Train, Save Me, San Francisco: Golden Gate Edition (Aware/Columbia)

Another Train LP, another big hit ("Hey, Soul Sister"). Last year's album is expanded for the holidays with a bunch of bonus material. (Amazon)

Various Artists, Rarities Edition (UMe)

Four of UMe's Deluxe Editions are cut to budget-size. Eric Clapton's self-titled 1970 debut, Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On and 3 Doors Down's The Better Life have their relevant bonus material (most of it, anyway) presented on each disc. (Amazon)

Various Artists, Icon (UMe)

Universal's budget compilation series is still going strong with sets from No Doubt, Barry White, Smash Mouth, WAR and others. (Amazon)

Ruffin & Kendrick, Ruffin & Kendrick (Superbird)

Bootsy Collins, What's Bootsy Doin? (Superbird)

George Clinton and The P-Funk All-Stars, T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. (Superbird)

Three straight reissues of some funk/soul classics - a 1988 reunion between two Temptations (the final work for each), a 1988 solo effort by one of the funkiest bassists and a 1996 P-Funk joint - all on the Cherry Red subsidiary Superbird. (Superbird)

A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

I really do not get all the love for "Pinkerton". Never will.

And I've heard the list of upcoming McCartney/Wings releases does not include "Tug Of War". Very disappointed in that.

Oh...and I've seen the Richards comp listed as "Vintage Vinos" everywhere. It's not! It's "Vintage Winos". His band was The X-Pensive Winos, and the album cover clearly shows a black and red "W". "Vinos" doesn't make any sense at all.

The "Vintage Vinos" mix-up has been bugging me as well. It doesn't help that Keith's own site has it listed as such. But I agree... the title has to be "Winos" and the album cover makes this pretty clear. I wonder how this got screwed up?
