Kinks Reissues Get Klearer

The other day we'd mentioned that The Kinks' first three U.K. albums were being expanded across the pond. Amazon's U.K. pages had track listings for the double-disc sets, but there wasn't much in the way of annotations. If a song popped up twice, was it an alternate mix? A live version? A demo? We didn't know, so we didn't say much.

Now, U.K. site Spin CDs has put up track listings for Kinks, Kinda Kinks and The Kink Kontroversy, and while there's still a small bit of speculation to be had, the track lists seem clear enough that The Second Disc feels comfortable enough to report on it.

In traditional Universal form, the deluxe editions look pretty hefty, if not bursting with unheard gems. Generally, each album is presented with one disc of the original LP and another of non-LP singles and B-sides, demos, outtakes and live BBC sessions. (Kinks is presented differently, having both a mono and stereo mix available.) Many of the bonus cuts have been presented elsewhere, from the Castle reissues that were released in England in the late 1990s to 2008's massive Picture Book box set. A couple of alternate versions and a few of the BBC tracks are presented for the first time anywhere on these sets, as you'll see below.

  1. There would be more outtakes, if Pye Records had not disposed of nearly all of the group's 1960's multitrack tapes. As for the 2nd & 3rd albums, which were never mixed for stereo, there is reason to think, that even if they could be remixed, that musically identical(to the mono) stereo mixes wouldn't be possible, due to live-during-mono-mixdown overdubs(as on another Shel Talmy production, The Who's "My Generation" album). The stereo version of "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" confirms this:It lacks the "Oh yes he is!" background vocals.
    There is reason to think, that even if the 2nd & 3rd Kinks albums had been mixed for stereo in the 1960's(at the time of release), that stereo editions wouldn't have sold well in the UK. The stereo edition of The Beatles debut album wasn't released until a few months after the mono edition, and wasn't(comparatively) a big seller. And an EMI executive once explained that the reason that the 2nd & 3rd Hollies albums weren't released in stereo in the UK until the 1970's is because the stereo edition of that group's debut album had sold poorly in the UK. Stereo didn't really find acceptance from UK consumers until 1968(about 2 years after the U.S.A.)

  2. Let's be fair about this Mono Stereo debate, as far as the UK was concerned, who really had a clue about mixing? It's there in the recorded evidence of the time. Whatever the Producer thought went. Most of them didn't have a clue about placing sounds in stereo 'pictures'. Adding additional echo doesn't instantly make any mix (Mono or Stereo) into a 'US' mix! That's all most did.
