Release Round-Up: Week of September 13

September 13, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Jimi Hendrix, Winterland / Hendrix in the West / Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival / The Dick Cavett Show (Experience Hendrix/Legacy)

Another wave of Hendrix catalogue titles from Legacy, all of a live nature. The Winterland set captures The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s legendary run at the venue of the same name over four discs (or one, if you’re into the whole brevity thing), while In the West provides an expanded, slightly alternate presentation of the posthumous live LP. The DVDs Blue Wild Angel and The Dick Cavett Show show Hendrix at his live prime, with some special features to boot. Look for reviews of all these sets – Joe’s take on the CDs and my look at the DVDs – very soon! (Official site)

The Beatles, 1 (Apple/EMI)

In case you weren’t one of the tens of millions of people who’ve picked up this compilation since 2000, it’s been remastered (from the 2009 remasters, naturally). (Official site)

Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, Live Bullet / Nine Tonight (Capitol/EMI)

Two killer Seger live albums, remastered and expanded with one bonus track apiece. (Official site)

The Art of Noise, Who’s Afraid of The Art of Noise? (ZTT/Salvo)

The first full-length LP by the influential U.K. act is expanded with unreleased BBC sessions and a DVD of videos and other vault treasures. (Official site)

1991: The Year Punk Broke (Geffen/UMe)

A greatly-expanded presentation of this vintage documentary, spotlighting the rise of Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., as seen on the road and in the trenches. (Official site)

Motown Gold on The Ed Sullivan Show / The Best of The Supremes on The Ed Sullivan Show / The Best of The Temptations on The Ed Sullivan Show (Hip-O/Sofa Entertainment)

The Sound of Young America and the Toast of the Town, combined on three handy DVD packages. (Official site)

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, with bylines on catalog at Discogs, City Pages and Ultimate Prince and credits on titles including the Grammy-winning 'Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of "Weird Al" Yankovic.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of music.

I am actually a bit puzzled by the Beatles 1 reissue. They already reissued the same tunes/same versions/ same remasters on the Red and Blue compilations (granted that route is more expensive – but you get more songs!). But, “1” has only been out a little over a decade and they decided it was worthy of CD reissue after selling millions of copies, yet they skim on Anthology to go digital only? The Anthology series would have at least made a nice limited edition boxset for collectors. I understand “1” is a better selling collection and more mass appealing, but that’s just it, it’s already sold so many copies!

I’ll be crossing my fingers for a BBC remaster on CD.

There’s only so much you can do with the old BEEB radio tapes.

I think the most “authentic” way to hear the BEEB recordings would be on an AM table radio, preferably a tube radio that still played with depth.

FYI to Beatle collectors… if you live in the US and shop at Target stores they have limited edition t-shirt and 7″ vinyl replica bundles available next to the Beatles 1 display in electronics on the end caps. As far as I’ve seen there are only four… Hello Goodbye, Can’t Buy Me Love, Let It Be, and Help!. Luckily had a gift card there and got Hello Goodbye. Overall nice shirt and lovely 7″ replica… might have to go get the others later! $17.99 on sale this week. Enjoy
