The recent release slate from U.K. super-reissue label Edsel is what we at Second Disc HQ like to call "an embarrassment of riches." You've seen our giveaways over the past few weeks highlighting some of the best expanded discographies Edsel's had to offer this year: Suede, The Beat, Sugar, Everything But the Girl and Jimmy Somerville, to name just five. Then there've been other expansions, like the recent Aztec Camera reissues, and neat compilations on the Music Club Deluxe sister label.
Can it get any better? We say yes!
In this post, you'll find a comprehensive breakdown of all the major discographical overhauls announced and released by Edsel in the past month or two. Some are welcome straight reissues of underappreciated albums, but most are exhaustively(!) thorough expansions of some of the best alternative bands and artists to grace the United Kingdom during the 1980s and 1990s.
Let's just cut right to the chase after the jump!
First up: out in the U.K. since last week and making their way via import to U.S. shops this week: new, straight reissues of the oft-overlooked first five LPs - Children of the Future, Sailor (both 1968), Brave New World, Your Saving Grace (both 1969) and Number 5 (1970) - in The Steve Miller Band discography. You know their classic rock staples of the mid-'70s like "The Joker" and "Fly Like An Eagle," but their early discography for Capitol showcases a less-polished psychedelic-blues sound, bolstered by the production of Glyn Johns (who helmed the first four LPs) and the singing, songwriting and guitar-playing of one Boz Scaggs, who would go solo after Sailor to deserved critical acclaim right about when Miller and his band found crossover success.
These discs are packaged in new digipaks featuring new liner notes by Joel Selvin, featuring new interviews with Miller and photos from his own collection. Let's give you those track rundowns now, and keep scrolling down for the next round from Edsel!

Next up, it's three expanded editions of Ian McCulloch's solo catalogue. The Echo and The Bunnymen frontman left the band in 1988, at which point they carried on without him, oddly. (The group would reform with McCulloch in 1997.) The singer's solo albums yielded some Modern Rock hits in the U.S., including "Proud to Fall" (which topped that chart), "Faith and Healing" and "Honeydrip." Candleland (1989), Mysterio (1992) and Slideling (2003) have all been expanded with their original B-sides and some surprises (an early solo single appended to Candleland, some unreleased early versions on Mysterio).
Like the Steve Miller titles, these are available now in the U.K. and should be hitting U.S. stores as imports around today. The rundown for these three titles is below.

Last, but certainly not least, Glasgow alt-rockers Deacon Blue are working with Edsel on a major overhaul of their catalogue. Not only will all of their albums (Raintown (1987), When the World Knows Your Name (1989), Fellow Hoodlums (1991), Whatever You Say, Say Nothing (1993) and Homesick (2001)) be remastered and expanded with heaps of bonus material and deluxe casebound packaging - one to two discs of bonus material and additional DVDs of promo videos for nearly every title - but a fifth 2-CD/1-DVD volume, The Rest, collates more non-LP single, EP and compilation material that didn't fit on the other expansions.
The first wave of these reissues land in the U.S. on October 16, with the other half of the catalogue arriving a week later. (All come just after the October 2 release date of Deacon Blue's new LP, The Hipsters, also to be released by Edsel.)

God there's some rubbish there. Shan't be shelling out for any of that lot!

I like this site a lot; it provides much great information. The very thorough discographical information is highly appreciated - you can't find that at many other sites, and I know that for many collectors like myself that it fulfills a big need (even if it's only a big psychological need!)
That said, there's a part of this site that's problematic, and that's the feeling that contributors here are unwilling or unable to criticize labels which, to the labels' credit, appear to be supportive of The Second Disc, such as the one showcased here, Edsel.
Edsel's reissues of the complete (English) Beat and early Everything But The Girl catalogs were things of beauty, and could reasonably viewed as exemplars of how reissues should be handled. They've received rave reviews from nearly all sources, and very deservedly so.
Yet other reissue programs by Edsel taking place in the same time frame have been colossal messes. I've written earlier about the problems with Edsel's Aztec Camera reissues. These problems include a huge and unmistakeable digital glitch in an otherwise hard-to-find bonus track, the repetition of an album track in place of the alternate version listed, suspiciously unremastered and compressed sound from dubious sources, and so on. All of this is made worse by the fact that much of these errors weren't inevitable. Other websites, for instance, have shown people willing to volunteer superior versions to what Edsel used, just to see the job done correctly. No response from Edsel.
Edsel's silence on the matter is depressing. (I mention Aztec Camera, but they're not the only artist who's suffered from a problematic reissue campaign by Edsel.) If they were simply a crappy label, it'd be one thing . . . but they so often do get things superbly right that their erratic quality control actually causes a lot of anger and bitterness by fans of the music they release, who'd love to blindly trust a label of such taste.
I'm in no place to tell the generous contributors and owners of this site what to do, but as a fan, I feel that all parties (this site, its followers, Edsel and its consumers, plus artists!) would be well-served by a more open dialogue and more honest criticism of releases which suffer from avoidable errors. Not to mention an attempt to correct matters! Edsel has, at the very least, sponsored this site by offering giveaways, which is a tremendously kind thing in today's poor environment for labels. Kudos to them.
But why not work a little harder to get this stuff right - or even ask for assistance - so that everyone can benefit? And why not reply openly to criticism that is so strongly merited? To be a better site, the Second Disc should solicit such dialogue, and not shy away from the problems. Otherwise, it ends up looking like a shill for the labels, which is sad given the otherwise high standards of writing and coverage here.
Joe Marchese says
Hey John,
A sincere and hearty thank you for your thoughts.
I can't speak for my partner here (and the author of this article in question), Mike, and so I'm only speaking for myself. And I'm at a bit of a loss as to some of your statements. Both Mike and I have endeavored, from Day One, to address every title that comes across our desks with fairness and honesty. As a reviewer, I've offered more than my share of criticism about a particular title or decision, as has Mike - just take a look at our many reviews and you'll come across numerous examples of that. I do not believe that I have ever been "unwilling or unable to criticize labels" or that I have ever been less than honest. If my tone is more measured and hopefully more constructive than that of some others, I won't apologize for that. I have never known a professional in this industry who has set out to create a sub-standard or inferior product, nor have I known a professional who hasn't been open to receiving honest, thoughtful, considered and knowledgable feedback from a fan or collector. I cannot comment as to the Aztec Camera reissues as I haven't heard them or reviewed them. (Remember, our news posts here are not reviews, nor are they intended to be. Our reviews are clearly marked as such.) But I do understand the passion, and the respect, that fans have in hoping something is "done right." In my personal experience, that passion is almost always shared by those creating the reissues.
We have always encouraged an "open dialogue" here, and do not make a practice of suppressing any comments, critical or otherwise. Nor have we ever; nor will we ever. That applies to criticism directed at each and every label, even the many labels that have sponsored contests here. Again, a cursory glance of our many posts should reveal this to be true. Is there something else you feel we haven't "gotten right" or some issue you feel we haven't "responded openly" to? I can't speak on Edsel's behalf, nor would I presume to, if you're referring to the Aztec Camera reissues. But if we make an error in our posts, it's usually a matter of minutes before one of our readers calls us out, and the error is addressed. Similarly, both Mike and I do respond to as many emails and comments here (such as this one!) as time permits.
I appreciate your feedback, John - positive and negative. We're always striving to "do better" as a source of information and, yes, dialogue, for fans, collectors, and professionals alike. Thanks for reading, and thanks for allowing me the opportunity to, hopefully, set the record straight.

As a rabid fan of this site, I think the information provided is the best of its nature anywhere on the web. After ICE magazine went deep six The Second Disc has picked up the leash of this lost dog. Until that point the only up & coming release information was pretty much fan-based hearsay (that was largely wishful thinking) and from record labels themselves (who were largely limited and withholding with the facts). So many, many pats on the backs of those at The Second Disc for doing what they do--need I remind anyone--without the cost of a subscription. As for the quality control issue, I believe this site handles this dilema the way it should--through the inclusion of this message forum! What better way to keep those who SUPPLY the product responsible than a dialog between those who BUY the product? Not to mention, all (well, most) records labels have contacts addresses of their own. So...Second Disc, keep supplying the info as adundantly and as frequently as you and we will process it as according thereafter.
John says
Fair enough, Joe. Thank you for the kind and detailed reply. I suppose, to refine my post somewhat, that one of the inherent problems with providing details of forthcoming releases is that they often come across more as press releases than product guides. This isn't an accusation - it's almost impossible for it to be otherwise when you're dealing with releases which are sometimes months away and (thus) not available for actual review. And because The Second Disc deals with reissues, a review of the actual artistry only makes partial sense - most people who've found their way to this site probably have already figured out their general opinion of Barbra Streisand or Aztec Camera. Even so, you do an excellent job of providing historical / musical context for those who may be unfamiliar with an artist or with a specific period of an artist's career.
The problem for the people who tune in here is that we tend to be obsessive about music . . . the first people to seek out interesting titles in their record shops and on the internet. We rely on sites like this one to provide (often obscure) information on new releases. So when an otherwise fine label like Edsel goofs up in numerous ways, it'd be great to see an actual story on that - there's really no place to reliably find that sort of information. If I were Edsel (or Kritzerland or Big Break, et al), I'd be quite happy that a place exists where their releases are covered in such great detail and with such consistency, and I'd hope that you'd encourage them to respond to viable concerns more readily. I've no real right to ask this of you, of course! You offer an excellent free service that must take up a lot of time you could devote to other things, and so my "complaint" really is taking liberties . . . so I make it only from the perspective that you (presumably) enjoy something many of us do not - direct contact with these labels.
Thanks again!
Don says
I'm dying to read a review, somewhere, of the Ian McCulloch reissues. This may be oversimplifying things, but I think in general the "good" Edsel releases are those that have direct involvement with the artist (ie, Everything but the Girl), and the "bad" releases are those that were done without the artist's oversight (ie Aztec Camera). I have no idea whether the McCulloch reissues were subject to his approval. But I'm just waiting to read a knowledgable review before I pull the trigger on buying them.
Don says
Update: just found a review of Candleland here: http://flipsideflipsidereviews.blogspot.com/2012/09/album-review-ian-mcculloch-candleland.html
Sure enough, there is talk of a "poor transfer" on the bonus tracks and an actual skip/glitch in one song. This is SHAMEFUL! The downside of Edsel putting out so much so fast is that of course quality control is going to take a hit. It's not like they're an enormous company. I doubt anyone even listened to some of these releases all the way through before they were sent out. 🙁

Can I just elaborate on what I said earlier; this selection is a load of rubbish, but kudos to Edsel for their excellent work on the Jesus & Mary Chain reissue's last year the Beat from this year. No complaints from this fan!
