Zombies, Everly Brothers, Paul McCartney Featured On Varese’s Record Store Day Slate

If you’re looking for Zombies on Record Store Day – and we’re not talking about The Walking Dead, either! – Varese Sarabande’s line-up for the April 18 event is just for you!  Besides a treat from the British rockers, the label is also offering up vintage rock-and-roll from The Everly Brothers, girl-group pop courtesy The Dixie Cups, a rare soundtrack from Sir Paul McCartney, and more!

Intended as the follow-up to the iconic Zombies album Odessey And Oracle, this is the first legitimate vinyl release of the never issued Zombies R.I.P. album as it was intended in the United States, in the original running order and from the correct master mixes.

This greatest hits album was originally issued on Cadence Records in 1962. It features Don and Phil Everly’s classic chart-topping hits, and it is available on vinyl for the first time in almost 50 years.  Tracks 5 and 8 on Side One, and Tracks 1, 3, 6, 7 on Side Two are in stereo; the remaining tracks are in mono.

The Dixie Cups, Chapel Of Love (Limited Edition of 1,800) 

Members of The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, The Dixie Cups were a 60s girl group from New Orleans, made up of sisters Barbara Ann and Rose Lee Hawkins and their cousin Joan Marie Johnson. In 1964, they had the mega hit “Chapel of Love,” written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector.  The album, co-produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, has been unavailable for over 40 years and is very hard to find. It sells for hundreds of dollars on the collectors market.   Tracks 1, 2, and 3 on Side One and all of Side Two are in stereo.

The Family Way: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Stereo) (Limited Edition of 3,000)

Music Composed by Paul McCartney, Supervised and Orchestrations arranged by George Martin

While on a break between Revolver and Sgt. Pepper in late 1966, Paul McCartney recorded the film score to the Hayley Mills film The Family Way, with a lot of help from Beatles arranger/producer George Martin.

This 1967 soundtrack is one of the most elusive Beatles souvenirs. The original vinyl album has been long out of print, and it is commanding sky-high prices on the collector’s circuit.  The tracklist includes “Love in the Open Air” by The Tudor Minstrels.

The album features the original score soundtrack from the first two seasons of the hit Netflix television series Orange Is The New Black. Gwendolyn Sanford, Brandon Jay, and Scott Doherty composed the score. The soundtrack will be available in a special orange and black vinyl edition.

The soundtrack from the Award Winning film features original jazz songs written for the film, original underscore written for the film, and classic jazz standards by Stan Getz, Duke Ellington and more. There are also choice snippets of dialog included on the soundtrack that sum up the narrative of the film and help to put the music in context (à la Pulp Fiction). The Original Score and Big Band Songs were created by Justin Hurwitz. The original jazz songs were created by Grammy-nominated composer, Tim Simonec.

JOE MARCHESE (Editor) joined The Second Disc shortly after its launch in early 2010, and has since penned daily news and reviews about classic music of all genres. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray.
