Positively Bob Dylan: "The Bootleg Series Vol. 12" Box Sets Collect 1965-1966 Sessions

Bob's dropped the big one.

News has just been confirmed of the next volume of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series - and it's the most comprehensive yet.  The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 looks at one of the most halcyon periods in the troubadour's long career: the creatively fertile time in the studio that yielded the trilogy of masterworks Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.

This new collection, transferred from the original tapes, will be available from Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on November 6 in four formats designed to suit the appetite and budget of every Dylanophile:

  • The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 - Deluxe Edition - This 6-CD set includes previously unheard Dylan songs, studio outtakes, rehearsal tracks, alternate working versions of familiar hits (including the complete "Like a Rolling Stone" session) and more.
  • The Best of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol.12 is available in a 2-CD or 3-12" vinyl LP set and brings together some of the musical high points of the deluxe and super-deluxe collections.
  • An 18-CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 will be available exclusively on bobdylan.com. This worldwide limited edition of 5,000 units includes every note recorded by Bob Dylan during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyric.  Per Legacy Recordings, "All previously unreleased recordings have been mixed, utilizing the original studio tracking tapes as the source, eliminating unwanted 1960s-era studio processing and artifice."  This staggering package also includes Dylan's original nine mono 45 RPM singles released during the time period, packaged in newly created picture sleeves featuring global images from the era. The limited edition includes rare hotel room recordings from the Savoy Hotel in London (May 4, 1965), the North British Station Hotel in Glasgow (May 13, 1966) and a Denver, Colorado hotel (March 12, 1966) as well as a strip of original film cels from "Don't Look Back."  All told, this has 379 tracks on 18 CDs!

He has contributed liner notes to reissues from a diverse array of artists, among them Nat "King" Cole, Paul Williams, Lesley Gore, Dusty Springfield, B.J. Thomas, The 5th Dimension, Burt Bacharach, The Mamas and the Papas, Carpenters, Perry Como, Rod McKuen, Doris Day, Jackie DeShannon, and Andy Williams, and has compiled releases for talents including Robert Goulet and Keith Allison of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Over the past two decades, Joe has also worked in a variety of capacities on and off Broadway as well as at some of the premier theatres in the U.S., including Lincoln Center Theater, George Street Playhouse, Paper Mill Playhouse, Long Wharf Theatre, and the York Theatre Company. He has felt privileged to work on productions alongside artists such as the late Jack Klugman, Eli Wallach, Arthur Laurents, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. In 2009, Joe began contributing theatre and music reviews to the print publication The Sondheim Review, and in 2012, he joined the staff of The Digital Bits as a regular contributor writing about film and television on DVD and Blu-ray. Joe currently resides in the suburbs of New York City.

  5. Hmm... As great as the actual albums are, I don't need six discs of outtakes or an entire disc of Like a Rolling Stone. I'd probably eagerly listen to that set once, maybe twice, and then it would likely sit and I'd go back to the original albums. So... Maybe the two-disc set for me? Even that I'm not sure about.

    When the hell are we going to get more live releases? Apart from Isle of Wight (as part of a deluxe set), it's been ages. Weren't the Supper Club shows supposed to be released by now? Still no shows released from the Never Ending Tour era.

    Honestly, Tell Tale Signs and No Direction Home are the last releases in this series that really interested me.

      • Perhaps, but it's a question of how much I'll honestly listen to any of it. Like I said, once very eagerly. Maybe twice, but after that it'll likely sit and when I want to hear Bob I'll go back to the original albums.

        Not to mention the original albums from other eras. And live stuff. And the earlier Bootleg Series releases that I enjoy. This new set just seems like overkill, even though I'm sure there are gems to hear.

        Again, I'd like more vintage live stuff released.

        • I see your point, especially thinking about the Basement Tapes 6-CD box... but I guess this set might be more easy on the ear, more "listenable" and overall more interesting... The BT box, I know it's been heralded even on these pages as some Holy Grail thing, but honestly how many times can you listen to a collection of very poorly recorded snippets, breakdowns, and drunken singing? I listened to it once, some songs twice, then put it away. Can you listen to it MORE than twice? I don't think it's humanly possible. On the other hand, Bootleg Series n.10 "Another Self Portrait", even if it's not considered in the same league as other sacred Dylan items, is very enjoyable, with very good sound/remastering, and I still listen to it on a regular basis.
          I agree with you that I'd like to listen to more, well recorded live stuff... I know I'm in a minority but I'd really love a box with the 1978 tour, I understand Earls Court was recorded... that would really make my day. Probably never going to happen.

  6. The material is obviously interesting. I guess the 6-CD box strikes a good balance. But keep in mind that the tracks originally released on official albums are only included on the 18-disc set. This means that songs that where completed in just one take (which made the album) are not included on the 6-CD set, in any form. So, no "Gates of Eden" nor "Maggie's Farm" on the 6-CD set. For "It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)", which was quickly completed after just one false start, you only get the false start. I understand why this has been done, but it does make the 6-CD set a bit wobbly. On the other hand, $600 for the megabox is madness. I understand the historical meaning etc., but let's not forget we're talking about a series of false starts and breakdowns, something that neither the artist nor the label, at the time, would ever think might get released one day.

  7. I'm content to wait and find a used copy of the 2CD set or maybe use one of the Target gift cards I usually get around Christmas time to pick up a new one. I'm afraid the six disc version would be way more than I would want to listen to. That mega-box is certainly for completest only, so I'll leave it to those fine folks.

  8. I'm unboxing the 18 disc behemoth right now. The first disc I pulled out [gingerly] has a large blemish that couldn't be wiped away. Not sure yet if it affects play. It's not a promising start...
