It's no exaggeration to state that Judy Collins transformed the sound of folk music. With a crystalline voice and a songbook blurring traditional genre lines, the Seattle native came to prominence in the fertile Greenwich Village stomping grounds of New York City. The luminous Collins - a classical piano prodigy, talented guitarist, gifted adapter and later, songwriter, and singer with a three-octave range - signed with Jac Holzman's Elektra Records in 1961 and remained an Elektra artist for

Bob Dylan met Columbia Records' John Hammond on September 14, 1961 at the apartment of folksinger Richard Farina and his then-wife Carolyn Hester. Dylan had been invited to Carolyn's rehearsal session as a harmonica player. Hammond later told the story of being so impressed with the young man from Hibbing, Minnesota that he decided to sign him on the spot. A subsequent audition took place, and when Dylan - then dazzling audiences at Gerde's Folk City on a bill shared with The Greenbriar Boys

Jac Holzman was still in college when he and pal Paul Rickolt each chipped in three hundred bucks to start a record company. That label, Elektra Records - so named for Greek mythology's daughter of Atlas and Pleione, but with the "c" swapped out for a "k" - inaugurated its catalogue with the simply-titled New Songs, an album of poetry settings by composer-pianist John Gruen. Elektra soon shifted its emphasis to folk music, growing its discography with recordings by Theodore Bikel, Josh White,

What started as a simple digital exercise for New Jersey rockers The Feelies is a new collection of some of their harder-to-find cover songs. The jangle-pop heroes will release Rewind on June 20, a nine-track affair featuring versions of cuts by The Beatles ("She Said She Said," "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey"), Neil Young ("Barstool Blues," "Sedan Delivery"), Bob Dylan ("Seven Days"), The Rolling Stones ("Paint It Black") and more. Most were recorded during the

Big things often come in small packages. Such is the case with Legacy Recordings' recent excavation of Bob Dylan and The Band's 1974 tour. 40 concerts took place over 30 dates and 21 cities, with Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Levon Helm, and Rick Danko even playing two shows in one day in many markets. The 1974 Live Recordings takes the form of a tiny cube, packing in 27 discs and 431 tracks (417 of which are previously unreleased). The set contains every

Bob Dylan had come a long way from coffeehouses. In 1974, the superstar singer-songwriter embarked on an extensive tour with his old backing band. Now, they, too, were universally known - as The Band - and the double bill hit indoor arenas across North America for 40 concerts over 30 dates and 21 cities. The tour became one of the largest and highest-profile of the era, in no small part due to the promotional efforts of David Geffen, who'd spurred on the talks and had recently lured Dylan
We're kicking off our Holiday Gift Guide Review series with a look at Bob Dylan's The Complete Budokan 1978. Long before Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan was reinventing himself. The artist who stepped onstage at Tokyo's Budokan arena in 1978 only bore superficial resemblance to the firebrand who was proclaimed a "Judas!" by an irate fan over a decade earlier at Manchester Free Trade Hall. That audience member was famously angry over the then-folkie's decision to plug in and

Next Tuesday, October 24, publishing house Callaway will release Mixing Up the Medicine, a 600+-page tome promised to be "the most comprehensive book yet published on the work of Nobel Prize-winning singer-songwriter-poet and cultural icon, Bob Dylan." As entire libraries could be filled with the books written on Dylan, that's no small boast - but this hefty coffee table volume looks like it might live up to the hype. Written and edited by Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel, the book celebrates
There was something about Midwestern-born rockers on the CBS Records roster making stops at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Japan. In 1979, Columbia issued not one but two live albums from the Tokyo venue, both simply titled At Budokan. While the one by Cheap Trick essentially made them stars in their home country, a double album of rearranged hits from Bob Dylan sharply polarized fans and critics. Now, on November 17, the Dylan camp is re-examining the artist's time in Japan with a brand-new box

Demon Music Group scored a real coup in 2021 with the release of Dance Masters: Shep Pettibone (The Classic Master Mixes), a box set devoted to the stellar late '80s and early '90s remixer. Now, two years later, another Dance Masters set is forthcoming, focused on the work of Baker himself. Dance Masters: Arthur Baker (The Classic Dance Remixes), due
Those of you who missed out on Bob Dylan's Shadow Kingdom: you're in luck. Shadow Kingdom will arrive from Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on June 2, and the film will be available for digital download and rental beginning the following Tuesday, June 6. Shadow Kingdom found Dylan dipping into the
The Oxford dictionary describes the phrase time out of mind as "a time in the past that was so long ago that people have no knowledge or memory of it." What was Bob Dylan getting at when he lifted the phrase for his 1997 Grammy Award-winning album? Critics and fans alike immediately seized on the notion of the record as some kind of dark farewell from an artist in the September of his years. Indeed, the album was filled with musings on lost love, mortality, hopelessness, and despair. But
