You've Got the Touch: Legacy's 2015 Black Friday RSD Slate includes Presley, Cash, Hendrix, Isley Brothers and "Transformers" Soundtrack

October 23, 2015 By Randy Fairman 5 Comments

Sony RSD Black Friday 2015Announcements about this year's Black Friday Record Store Day event have been trickling out.  A couple of days ago we brought you news of Omnivore's titles and before that, of Real Gone's Dictators release!   Now we can tell you about Legacy's slate for the day after Thanksgiving.

The titles run the gamut in size from 7" singles to 12" 2-LP sets, and also range in genre from rock to country to hip-hop.  Several soundtracks are being released including a single from the 1960s Batman TV show, the film Garden State and 1986's animated Transformers: The Movie.  Artists from past Black Friday Record Store Days are present like Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley and OutKast.  Some titles are making their vinyl debut (Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) and some have been completely unreleased previously (The Isley Brothers, a side of the Presley single).

Read below for the full slate of titles which will be released on Friday, November 27 at all participating retailers.  And watch this space for more announcements about this year's Black Friday Record Store Day festivities!

Please note:  All of the information below is taken directly from Legacy's press release.

Various Artists, Transformers: The Movie Soundtrack - 12" 2-LP Etched Sides: A (Autobot) / D (Decepticon) in Transforming Package

In commemoration of the 1986 cinematic blockbuster, Legacy has created an innovative gatefold jacket that completely converts all four sides of the cover from an Autobot-themed jacket to a Decepticon-themed jacket. This 2-LP collection is pressed on 150-gram color vinyl: LP-1 in translucent red with the Autobot logo etched on Side A; LP-2 in translucent purple with the Decepticon logo etched on Side D. Remastered and re-imagined, Transformers: The Movie Soundtrack has never looked or sounded better!

Earth, Wind & Fire, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 - 12" Vinyl Picture Disc

A Billboard Top 10, RIAA 5x platinum-selling album, The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vol. 1 has been pressed as a collectible picture disc, featuring the iconic EWF gold coin logo plus a die-cut insert, especially for RSD 2015.

The Isley Brothers, Groove with You...LIVE! - 12" 2-LP Gold/Blue 180g Vinyl

The album includes the hits "That Lady" and "Fight the Power" plus fan favorites like "Here We Go Again," "Summer Breeze," and "Voyage to Atlantis." Featuring new cover art, evocative of the era, Groove with You...LIVE! is a 2-LP set pressed on 180gram gold (LP1) and blue (LP2) vinyl, designed to look like a classic release from the Isley Brothers' T-Neck discography.

Johnny Cash, Man In Black: Live in Denmark 1971 - 12" 2-LP Red/White 120g Vinyl

American musical icon Johnny Cash was at a career highpoint and in the middle of a successful tour of Scandinavia in 1971 when asked to star in his own concert special for Danish television. Lensed before a small audience on a small sound set, Man In Black: Live in Denmark 1971 captures the essence of a Johnny Cash show of the era, showcasing performances with his touring companions--the Tennessee Three (his backup band) June Carter Cash, the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, and the Statler Brothers--on a setlist of hits, classics and songs-of-the-day including "If I Were a Carpenter" (Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash), the song that won the couple the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Previously commercially available only as a DVD (released in 2006), the audio portion of Johnny Cash's Man In Black: Live in Denmark 1971 can finally be enjoyed for the first time as a full-length album on RSD Black Friday 2015. This collectible 2-LP set is pressed on 120-gram opaque white (LP1) and red (LP2) vinyl (the colors of the flag of Denmark).  This concert will then be released on CD and DD by Legacy on December 4!

The "Batman Theme"/"The Batusi" single is pressed on opaque yellow vinyl in a newly designed picture sleeve inspired by the original graphics of the show.

I see the first Clash album in the picture but there is nothing in the announcement about it. Anything special about this release?

It does look like a picture disc. I did find out there's an RSD release of Joe Strummer's first band, the 101er's:

      Elgin Avenue Breakdown

Elgin Avenue Breakdown was a compilation album of the band's recordings originally released in 1981 because of The Clash's popularity. This vinyl release is based on the CD re-issue by EMI in 2005 with liners by Allan Jones and detailed notes on each track by the band's drummer Richard Dudanski. Limited edition RSD exclusive.

Now how about stand-alone CD releases of the SRV and Hendrix stuff mentioned here?

As always, the whole RSD thing caters to the vinyl hipsters (not that I'd go chasing around for stuff I'd probably get shut out on anyhow) but those who still buy CDs don't get the same goods.

I am not a vinyl person either, and I often wonder if when people by these pricey RSD vinyl releases, if they really play and enjoy them or if they just get filed away in the collection. I do know a lot of people buy them only to immediately flip them for a profit on Ebay. Here on the west coast you can see Ebay listings from the east coast re-sellers before the record stores have even opened here. I used to go out on RSD but unless there are some CD releases I am interested in, I don't bother anymore. Last RSD in April I did go out and picked up the Joan Rivers CD. Got the last one they had too.

Yep - no need for me to go out on RSD if all the new stuff is vinyl. Sigh.
