Hot on the heels of last Friday's announcement that the next David Bowie box would include the unreleased album The Gouster, the details of what will be in the box have been released from Parolphone. Coming on September 23 in CD, vinyl and digital download editions, David Bowie - Who Can I Be Now? (1974-1976) will contain the following albums:
- Diamond Dogs (Remastered) 1-CD
- David Live (Original Mix) (Remastered) 2-CD
- David Live (2005 Mix) (Remastered) 2-CD
- The Gouster (Previously Unreleased as an album) 1-CD
- Young Americans (Remastered) 1-CD
- Station to Station (Remastered) 1-CD
- Station to Station (Harry Maslin 2010 Mix) 1-CD
- Live Nassau Coliseum '76 2-CD
- Re:Call 2 (Single Versions and non-album b-sides) 1-CD
These albums are from what is considered Bowie's "American" period. As with last year's Five Years box set, several of the albums are presented in multiple mixes. The David Live 2005 Mix is from the expanded reissue of that album from that year and the remix of Station to Station as well as the Live Nassau Coliseum '76 release are from the Super Deluxe Station to Station from 2010. (The remix was only available on the DVD-Audio in that Super Deluxe edition while the Nassau concert was available also in the 3-CD edition.)
The Re:Call bonus disc also follows the format from the extra disc in the previous box. It promises some new-to-CD tracks such as the original single mix of "Rebel Rebel," the Australian single edit of "Diamond Dogs" and the single edit of the live version of "Rock 'n' Roll With Me."
The design of Who Can I Be Now? also keeps up the tradition of Five Years. Each album in the CD set will be housed in a mini-vinyl replica LP sleeve and the CDs themselves will be gold instead of the traditional silver. The 128-page booklet (84 pages in the vinyl edition) will contain "rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Eric Stephen Jacobs, Tom Kelley, Geoff MacCormack, Terry O'Neill, Steve Schapiro, and many others as well as historical press reviews and technical notes about the albums from producers Tony Visconti and Harry Maslin." A replica of a handwritten note from Bowie concerning the running order of The Gouster will also be included. The vinyl edition will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl.
Please also note that there are several versions of the digital editions available. There are two hi-res editions: 192kHz/24 bit and 96kHz/24 bit. Neither of these editions will contain the alternate mix versions of David Live or Station to Station or the Nassau concert or Re:Call album. The regular digital download edition contains all of the audio content and is apparently also available in a Mastered for iTunes edition (although the Nassau concert and Re:Call album will contain the same mastering in both editions).

Eric Levy says
And for those of us who already have all of the regular albums and no interest in re-purchasing them, will THE GOUSTER be made available separately?
Andrea says
I read the press release on Bowie's site as well, and I must admit I'm a bit confused.
For instance:
"David Live (2005 Mix) (Remastered) 2-CD" - does the "remastered" in brackets mean that the 2005 mix has been newly remastered for this release?
Consequently, "Station to Station (Harry Maslin 2010 Mix)", with no mention of a remastering, might imply it's exactly the version released in 2010, right?
And, more important, the titles that are being remastered, exactly are being remastered from *what*? From the original tapes? "Remastered" doesn't mean much if the source is not stated. Can anyone shed some light on this? Which is actually the only info of some substance when talking about reissue. Thanks!
David Olstein says
They should have included the three "spares" on The Gouster.
Moo says
Why are they leaving the important stuff out of the hi-res version (Nassau, David Live Expanded, Rebel Rebel single mix & Diamond Dogs bonus tracks). GRRRRR.
