Sound and Vision: “Lazarus” Cast Recording Premieres David Bowie’s Final Recordings

Thanks to Columbia and ISO Records, there will be a next day for David Bowie’s Lazarus.  On October 20, the labels will release the original cast album of the off-Broadway musical, starring Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Cabaret) and Cristin Milioti (How I Met Your Mother, Once).  The deluxe release, showcasing an array of Bowie reinterpretations, will feature a bonus disc with Bowie’s own recordings of the musical’s four new songs including the previously released “Lazarus” (from his final studio LP, Blackstar) as well as the never-before-released “No Plan,” “Killing a Little Time” and “When I Met You” – the late artist’s final studio recordings.

Picking up where the film The Man Who Fell to Earth (itself receiving Blu-ray and CD releases this year) left off, Lazarus opened at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 7, 2015 in an acclaimed, sold-out production directed by Ivo Van Hove.  Written by Bowie and playwright Enda Walsh (Once), Lazarus featured dramatic rearrangements of many Bowie standards including “The Man Who Sold the World,” “Changes,” “All the Young Dudes,” and “Life on Mars?” as well as instant classics like The Next Day’s “Where Are We Now.”

The cast recording was produced by the show’s musical director Henry Hey, who had worked with Bowie on The Next Day.  The album features Hey’s seven-piece band and the full original cast including Hall, Milioti, Michael Esper and Sophia Anne Caruso.  The album was recorded on January 11, 2016.  When the cast entered the studio that day, they learned of Bowie’s shocking passing the evening before.  (He had been an integral part of the show’s development and rehearsal period, and made his final public appearance at its opening night.)

You can hear David Bowie’s final recordings of some of his most strikingly theatrical music when Lazarus arrives from ISO/Columbia as a 2-CD or 3-LP set on October 21.  Pre-order links should be available this Friday, September 16, and we will update accordingly!
