Intrada Goes to Vietnam for Two Rare Disney Scores

July 12, 2017 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Intrada has released two very different scores to two live action Disney comedies, both based on true events of the Vietnam War–as unbelievable as that may seem. Alex North’s score to Good Morning, Vietnam and David Newman’s score to Operation Dumbo Drop have been dusted off for a 2-for-1 release on CD.

Good Morning, Vietnam featured late funnyman Robin Williams as Adrian Cronauer, a real-life disc jockey on the Armed Forces Radio Service. His irreverent broadcasts confound his superiors but provide a much-needed respite from the horrors of the conflict in Vietnam. The film was arguably Williams’ first venture into more serious territory, earning him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. North’s brief score, some 17 minutes worth, was largely dialed out of the movie in favor of many pop song cues, but gets its due here for the first time.

It’s paired with David Newman’s score to Operation Dumbo Drop, another strange-but-true script about two Green Berets (Danny Glover and Ray Liotta) who lead a team to transport an elephant through the jungle to an allied South Vietnamese village. Newman, the son of legendary 20th Century-Fox composer Alfred, turned out a captivating score featured in part on the original soundtrack but expanded to near-completion here.

Each score is newly remixed for this release: Vietnam from original 2″ 24-track elements and Dumbo Drop from 48-track elements by legendary engineer Bruce Botnick (who led Disney in manually re-synching the two 28-track recorders after original timecodes went missing). Veteran writer John Takis provides liner notes.

Mike Duquette

Michael Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he discovered there was more than one version of John Williams' soundtrack to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his intended profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small, from vintage soul to stirring film scores. His passion for reissues turned into a profession in 2014 with co-producing credits on two best-selling vinyl singles for Sony's Legacy Recordings: a 30th anniversary "ecto-green" pressing of Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" and a celebratory pressing of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" on red and green vinyl. Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with an ever-expanding collection of box sets and vinyl.
