Music of the Night: Andrew Lloyd Webber Celebrates His 70th Birthday with a New Box Set

Since September 25, 1979, there hasn't been a day when an Andrew Lloyd Webber melody hasn't been heard on Broadway.  That was the opening night of Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Evita.  Before it ended its run in June 1983, Lloyd Webber's musical Cats had opened, launching a record-breaking run through September 2000.  But on January 26, 1988, the show opened which would eclipse them all: Phantom of the Opera.  It today celebrates 30 years (marked with a special gala earlier this week) and is comfortably the longest-running show in Broadway history, even as its composer continues to celebrate his newest hit, 2015's School of Rock.  On Sunday evening, he will reunite with long-estranged star Patti LuPone to reprise their triumphant "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita at the Grammy Awards.

In March, Lloyd Webber will address his successes and, indeed, his controversies in what promises to be a candid biography, Unmasked.  The book's March 6 publication will be followed on March 16 by a new 4-CD box set (or 2-CD highlights edition) of a companion box set.  Unmasked: The Platinum Collection boasts 71 tracks on four CDs, including performances from Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Elvis Presley, Alice Cooper, Tom Jones, The Everly Brothers, and the stars of his hit shows onstage such as Glenn Close, Donny Osmond, Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman, and Michael Crawford.  Previously unreleased tracks by Beyoncé, Gregory Porter, Lana Del Rey, and Nicole Scherzinger are also featured.

Unmasked isn't the first box to salute Lloyd Webber, who turns 70 on March 22.  The long out-of-print Now and Forever (2001) rounded up 99 tracks on five CDs including a disc of rarities, while 2008's simply-titled 60 had 60 tracks for his 60 years on three CDs.  This set of all-killer, no-filler hits eschews q chronological "musical by musical" approach to tell the Lloyd Webber story up to the present day and such recent projects as The Woman in White, Phantom sequel Love Never Dies, Stephen Ward: The Musical, and School of Rock.

Tracks have been drawn from original and revival cast recordings, film soundtracks, studio versions, and even television shows.  Original cast performances include songs by Brightman and Michael Crawford ("The Phantom of the Opera," "The Music of the Night"), Elaine Paige ("Rainbow High" from the London premiere of Evita), Glenn Close ("As If We Never Said Goodbye" from the Broadway debut of Sunset Boulevard).  The set has also been culled from Lloyd Webber's groundbreaking concept albums (Murray Head's original "Superstar" from Jesus Christ Superstar, Julie Covington's debut of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita).  Orchestral tracks reflecting Lloyd Webber's classical inspirations include "Phantom Phantasy," "Aspects of Aspects" (Aspects of Love), a suite from Love Never Dies, and a number of overtures.  There are also curios such as "Sing," written by Lloyd Webber and Gary Barlow to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012, and performed by a military wives' choir.

Nicole Scherzinger has newly recorded "Memory" from Cats (introduced by Elaine Paige, subsequently sung on Broadway by Betty Buckley, and notably covered by Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand), reprising her London performance in the role of Grizabella.  The other unreleased tracks include Lana Del Rey's take on the Academy Award-winning "You Must Love Me" from the film adaptation of Evita, and Gregory Porter's "Light at the End of the Tunnel" from Starlight Express.  Beyoncé's rendition of "Learn to Be Lonely" from the film version of Phantom, as performed at the Academy Awards, makes its audio debut.

The career-spanning Unmasked: The Platinum Collection is due from UMe/Polydor in 4-CD and 2-CD iterations on March 16.  The 4-CD box includes a 40-page book with an introduction from Lloyd Webber and track-by-track notes.  You'll find pre-order links and the 4-CD track listing below for this celebration of the musical theatre legend.
