Dipped in Moonlight: Real Gone Reissues Grateful Dead, L7 and Pentangle in September

Real Gone Music has announced three more reissues hitting shelves on September 7, joining previously-announced titles from Alice Coltrane, The Munsters, and more!

First up is a vinyl reissue of Pentangle’s 1968 double-album Sweet Child, celebrating its 50th anniversary.  The British folk-jazz group came together in 1967 and consisted of Jacqui McShee (vocals), John Renbourn (guitar and vocals), Bert Jansch (guitar and vocals), Danny Thompson (double bass) and Terry Cox (drums).  Their first appearance together came at a May 1967 concert at Royal Albert Hall.  The band signed with Transatlantic Records and released their self-titled debut album in May, 1968.  It was produced by Shel Talmy, famous for his work with The Kinks and The Who.

Talmy returned to produce Pentangle’s second album, Sweet Child, released in November, 1968.  The first half of the double-album set is taken from a live concert from Royal Festival Hall on June 29, 1968.  The second half consists of studio recordings made at IBC Studios.  The repertoire is varied, going from Charles Mingus covers (“Haitian Fight Song” and “Pork Pie Hat”) to traditional folk tunes (“No More My Lord” and “Bruton Town”) to Pentangle originals (“In Time,” “In Your Mind,” “A Woman Like You” and “Sweet Child.”  The cover was designed by Peter Blake, who had designed the cover to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band the previous year.  Real Gone’s new reissue features the original cover art and comes in sky-blue vinyl, limited to 700 copies.

Next, Real Gone jumps ahead nearly thirty years for a vinyl reissue of L7’s 1994 album Hungry for Stink.  The all-female band formed in California in 1985 and are viewed as a precursor to grunge and the riot grrl genres.  They had a couple of line-up changes, but by 1994, the members were Donita Sparks (guitar and vocals), Suzi Gardner (guitar and vocals), Jennifer Finch (bass and vocals), Demetra Plakas (drums and vocals).

1994’s Hungry for Stink was the band’s second album on Slash Records and their fourth overall.  It was released around the same time the group appeared on the main stage at that year’s Lollapalooza tour.  Entirely self-written, the album contains such fan favorites as “Fuel My Fire” and “Andres.”  The album bubbles under the Billboard 200 but made the Top 30 in the UK.  The group disbanded in 2001 after two more albums but reunited in 2014.  A documentary, Pretend We’re Dead, was released in 2016.  In April of this year, L7 announced a new album funded through PledgeMusic, which is due to be released in early 2019.

Real Gone’s release marks the first vinyl reissue of Hungry for Stink (a small vinyl pressing was released at the time of the album’s original release).  The new reissue features the original cover art with lyric insert and comes on red vinyl.  It is limited to 1,200 units.

The next September release from Real Gone is another entry in the label’s ongoing series of Grateful Dead’s Road Trips.  Real Gone has been bringing these releases to general retail in reverse order and are now up to Vol. 4, No. 1: Big Rock Pow-Wow ’69.

The 3-CD set features two shows recorded at the Big Rock Pow-Wow, a rock festival held at the Hollywood Seminole Indian Reservation in West Hollywood, Florida on May 23-25, 1969.  The Grateful Dead recordings come from May 23rd and 24th.  This comes just a little under a month before the release of their third studio album, Aoxomoxoa.  Several songs from that LP are featured at these shows including “St. Stephen,” “Doin’ That Rag” and “China Cat Sunflower.”  The shows were recorded by Owsley (Bear) Stanley.

Real Gone’s reissue recreates the content from the original release, which was only available from the Grateful Dead’s website in 2010.  The 16-page booklet contains notes by Blair Jackson and a reminiscence from Tom Constanten.

If you would like to give any of these titles a try, we’ve got the full tracklistings and pre-order links below.
