Anyone Who Had a Heart: Dionne Warwick Saluted on Public Television, New Rarities-Packed CDs, More

August 17, 2018 By The Second Disc 45 Comments

From the moment she burst onto the music scene in 1962 exhorting "Don't Make Me Over," Dionne Warwick has been a musical force with which to be reckoned.  The legendary singer blended elegant pop and deeply-felt soul in a fashion which remains unrivaled today for its sophistication and polish; her signature songs like "Walk On By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Alfie," and "I'll Never Love This Way Again" have all become cornerstones of the new American songbook.   Dionne's remarkable life and career will be saluted on a new Public Television special which begins airing nationwide in many cities tomorrow, Saturday, August 18 with additional telecasts the following week and on some stations into September. Check your local listings or go to this PBS station search link: https://www.pbs.org/tv_schedules/

MY MUSIC Presents: Dionne Warwick - Then Came You traces Warwick's history from her upbringing in East Orange, New Jersey through her breakthrough success in the 1960s as one-third of the "triangle marriage" with Burt Bacharach and Hal David, right up through her successful collaborations with Thom Bell and Barry Manilow and to the present day.  A "Who's Who" of talent have lined up to pay tribute to Warwick in this fascinating portrait of an artist and her craft, including Bacharach, Manilow, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Johnny Mathis, Richard Carpenter, Chuck Jackson and Steve Tyrell.  Warwick herself is featured in brand-new interview footage, as well.

At the heart of Then Came You is a treasure trove of rare, full-length performances by Warwick at all stages in her career, including indelible musical performances of the following classic songs:

  • "Anyone Who Had A Heart"
  • "I Say A Little Prayer"
  • "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?"
  • "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"
  • "Don't Make Me Over"
  • "Theme From 'Valley Of The Dolls'"
  • "Alfie"
  • "The Windows Of The World"
  • "Promises, Promises"
  • "Message To Michael"
  • "Reach Out For Me"
  • "Make It Easy On Yourself" (with Burt Bacharach)
  • "Then Came You" (with The Spinners)
  • "I'll Never Love This Way Again"
  • "Heartbreaker"
  • "That's What Friends Are For" (with Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder)

DIONNE ON THE DANNY KAYE SHOW (1965)

This one-of-a-kind special is part of the acclaimed MY MUSIC series of fundraising "pledge shows" presented by Series Creator/Executive Producer TJ Lubinsky and producers Jim Pierson and JoAnn Young.  During the PBS airings, viewers will have the opportunity to purchase Then Came You on DVD - which offers an additional, all-new documentary, The Dionne Warwick Story, not seen on TV as well as extended song performances and other extras, along with a pair of exclusive, new PBS-only CD releases offering many rarities, including tracks never-before-on CD and previously unreleased masters.

DIONNE ON THE DICK CAVETT SHOW (1969)

The deluxe 3-CD The 1960s Singles Plus is the set for which Dionne fans have long been waiting: a complete collection featuring the A- and B-sides of every one of her classic Scepter Records singles, first released between 1962 and 1977.  A total of 74 songs are featured including all of the classic original Bacharach/David productions like "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Promises, Promises," and "Anyone Who Had A Heart," and rare favorites like "Slaves," "Amanda," "He's Moving On," and many, many more.  All of the remastered tracks are presented in their original mono single mixes, with the exception of a few later titles issued as stereo singles.  Music historian Paul Grein has provided the new liner notes, and rare pictures are sprinkled throughout.

But TJL wouldn't leave Dionne's career hanging!  She followed up the Scepter years with further triumphs, and TJL is proud to present them on another collectors' dream release.  Hits & Rarities 1974-1999 is the first comprehensive look at this period in Warwick's career, featuring such smashes as "Then Came You," "I'll Never Love This Way Again," "Heartbreaker," "Déjà Vu," and "That's What Friends Are For."  Among the rare tracks here are the duet "In Love Alone" with Richard Carpenter; the lullaby "Sail Away" recorded for a children's album; the Bacharach/David reunion "On My Way" from the 1999 film Isn't She Great; and the new-to-domestic CD recording of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" from the Dionne Warwick Sings Cole Porter sessions.  And that's still not all.  Seven previously unreleased tracks premiere on Hits & Rarities, including duets with Barry Manilow ("Never Gonna Let You Get Away") and Barry Gibb ("Let It Be Me"); Manilow's production of the Bacharach/David classic "The Last One to Be Loved"; "What Becomes of Love" from the 1981 television miniseries Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls; two concert tracks; and the full, extended stereo version of her theme to The Love Boat.  TSD's Joe Marchese has penned the liner notes based on new interviews with Warwick and Bacharach, and it's all been remastered at Sony's Battery Studios.

Additionally, the 2013 CD Dionne Warwick Sings Burt Bacharach is also being offered in conjunction with Then Came You.  This splendid set was originally offered as a PBS exclusive pledge incentive for the Burt Bacharach's Best special, and contains both Scepter label singles and album tracks with a rare Warner Bros. cut.  See TSD's original coverage here for all information on this title including the track listing!

Check your local listings for the My Music presentation of Dionne Warwick - Then Came You on Public Television premiering this weekend in most areas. Be sure to call your local PBS station or any PBS outlet of your choice to make a donation and receive the new CDs and/or DVD or go to the link here and pledge online:

Are the scepter singles culled from the Japanese remasters from 2013 or remixes by Bill Inglot from 2005, or are they newly remastered?

Hi Dirk, there are no remixes as these are all original mono single versions with just a handful of later tracks in original stereo single versions.
Some were on the recent Japanese CDs and others are making their CD debuts here. Hope this helps!

Hi Mark! Certainly. “DW Sings BB” is a (fantastic) 2013 collection that was released to tie in with TJL’s Bacharach documentary. Here’s our write-up from way back then with the full track listing.

Both discs are produced for Public Television by TJL Productions and licensed via Warner Music (the Scepter singles) and Sony Music (Hits & Rarities), with the latter title cross-licensed from various other labels, too. Both are tremendous collections, released with Dionne’s kind and generous participation.

I'd be interested to know if "You Can Have Him" features the drum splice that's present on the mono version from the 2013 Japanese Dionne reissues. It wasn't on the original single.

Btw, the splice occurs just after 3:18 on the mono "You Can Have Him" from the 2013 Mono/Stereo "The Sensitive Sound of Dionne Warwick" CD.

I recently found out that the track ran longer on the UK/Euro single, at circa 4 minutes. I don't suppose the longer edit is on the new CD? I believe it's on the "Hidden Gems" CD, but in stereo.

I know PBS is a great cause and all but $150 for the two CD sets is sooo pricey. I'd go for $100 but whew...wonder if they'll ever see the light of day from Sony or Warmer Music? And also on the PBS site, it refers to the Singles set as a two-CD set, which doesn't make sense.

The Scepter singles collection is indeed a 3-CD set. Thanks for letting us know that there's some misinformation out there. Producing these releases as Public Television exclusives allows the fine folks at TJL to get material released that otherwise wouldn't be possible commercially, and I know that goes for this pair of titles.

Thanks for the answer Joe. Actually, its my mistake about the site listing the singles set as a two disc set. For some reason, I thought the Hits and Rarities was a two disc set, not a single disc set. Sorry about that. The PBS site is, indeed, correct.

I still have a VHS of Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls I taped live from TV in 1981. I have always loved the song "What Becomes of Love" and cannot believe it is finally being released along with an extended stereo version of "Love Boat." I have Dionne singing "Love Boat" on the Rhino Tube Tunes Vol. 3 CD, but it is not a quality recording. One of my favorite Dionne lost recordings released in the 1990s on the Best of James Bond CD is "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." Such an exquisite lyric, production, performance, and recording, and so James Bond!

On another note, I just watched Dionne Warwick: Then Came You on WEDU my local PBS affiliate (Tampa-St. Petersburg), but there are no products available on the WEDU website. The link you included here is for SoCal. I prefer to support my local affiliate. Is the SoCal link the only place to find the products?

Hi Howard, I might contact WEDU and ask if they're offering a pledge incentive in conjunction with the program? Most PBS affiliates throughout the country should be offering the incentives; we've only offered the California link as one example. "What Becomes of Love" and the complete "Love Boat" both sound phenomenal on the new collection!

Apparently there was a glitch on the WEDU website the first couple of times I searched, but later I was able to find the offer and make my pledge. Hoping it doesn't really take 4 to 6 weeks for my DVD and CDs to arrive!

I hate this kind of thing so much. PBS is a wonderful cause, sure, but the per-disc price point is just too much - it's more than a Japan import! Then, there's no way to buy just one of the titles at a time - I can't spend $150 all at once. Ultimately, though, this type of exclusive release only creates a 2nd hand market due to its limited availability. These programmes are wonderful, but these are just too expensive. It's becoming so frustrating to be a collector!

You are right Donald. Currently on Ebay there is a listing for the PBS Carpenters Complete Singles CD for $200! Others sold on Ebay for around $150, the cheapest was a used one which sold for around $60. I don't understand why they don't make these sets available for purchase through the PBS store. They could offer combo packages for the membership pledge drives, but also offer the CD and DVDs separately at reasonable prices for sale exclusively via the PBS stores. They would sell a lot of them and generate so much revenue for PBS that way as well. They need to pull their heads out of their a***s.

So right Zubb. An exclusive, available at the PBS.com store, would be a great idea. Sell them separately too. It IS hard to be a collector anymore, especially a CD collector. So much stuff is available only on Vinyl or - the worst of all - sets which are combos of vinyl and CDs.

I understand that TJL wants to help PBS, but I really think it stinks that they will not make these sets available elsewhere. They could sell them through PBS exclusively for awhile, then make them more commercially available at a later date. I wanted The Carpenters set and would love to have this one as well, but man o man is the price too high! It's not right.

We completely understand everybody’s desire to have these projects available at lower price points and/or at general retail. That said, we’re very grateful that Public Television affords the fine folks at TJL the opportunity to create these kinds of projects that would be impossible to do for commercial release. Without the system that is currently in place, these releases simply wouldn’t happen, especially in today’s climate. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, everybody.

Hi Wes, Each project presents its own special challenges in determining commercial viability - everything from the availability of sources and the amount of restoration needed to the amount of tracks. In the case of Dionne’s Scepter singles, we’re looking at 3 CDs and nearly 75 tracks. Believe me, if a label felt there was money to be made on such a release, they would have done so long ago. The “Hits & Rarities” disc has a number of previously unreleased tracks plus new-to-CD songs...and its cross-licensed from various labels. That would be a tall order for any commercial company today. Perhaps “impossible” was the wrong choice of words, but certainly “unlikely” fits the bill. I’ve learned that nothing is impossible, but every single project on which I’ve worked has presented unique challenges. Without TJL’s determination and its arrangement with PBS, it’s likely these projects would never have happened and certainly not in the high quality with which they’re being produced. Hope this helps at least a little!

I purchased this excellent collection when it initially was released last August. The sound on all of the CD's is incredible. Who did the remastering? They certainly did a great job. The duet of the Last One to be Loved and the What Becomes of Love track are wonderful. Is there any chance that Real Gone Music will release a 2-CD Collection of Dionne's Arista A&B Singles along with a disc of the remaining Arista unreleased tracks? Still waiting for the song Love's HIding Place from the film The Seduction which was recorded during her Arista years. Perhaps you can relay this request to Real Gone. They did an excellent job in 2013 with the Warner Singles and Unreleased Masters collections and in 2018 with the Scepter Rarities Collection. Sill waiting for a remastered disc of the Tony Camillo Warner sessions and the extended version of We Need to Get Back. Also, a thank you Joe for you insightful and informative liner notes on the PBS releases and Real Gone releases.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Don! They're truly appreciated. Mike Piacentini at Sony's Battery Studios remastered "Hits and Rarities." He does similarly wonderful work on our Second Disc/Real Gone series of Johnny Mathis reissues. Mike Milchner remastered "The Singles," and he, too, has done great work on our releases including the expanded edition of Melissa Manchester's "Mathematics." We very much hope to continue working with Dionne's discography. I can only speak for myself, but I would certainly love to see all of the above material addressed in the future. Stay tuned!

Thank you, Joe, for the reply, I will definitely stay tuned!

One of my wet dreams is also to have Miss Warwick’s musical contributions for “Solid Gold” consistently preserved on disk (or whatever stable medium). At the peak of her vocal abilities, she showed a tremendous amount of craft, professionalism and real artistry. My favorite example is how she dealt with performing another R&B’s diva then-hit “Who’s Zoomin’ Who” … absolutely brave (who would even dare to try that today?): https://youtu.be/pob-AmgIUqM

It’s a tradition that reminds me of the long-gone era that we associate with jazz today – but it was actually the popular music of the day, and got bounced around various performers, and everybody put their stamp on it: many misses but some hits.

Dionne Warwick actually did that for “Solid Gold” in the 1980s, and it would be a such a shame not to have that daring cultural contribution preserved.

YES! Dionne has never shied away from recording and performing covers. A remastered collection of her Solid Gold performances would be a dream!

We're big fans of Dionne's "Solid Gold" performances. There are a number of rights issues (typical for television performances), but anything is possible!

Thanks, Joe, for getting back to us; I'm so glad to hear that you guys share our enthusiasm.

I realize that the licensing issues are difficult, but I trust that you may be able to sort them out.

I so much appreciate your work! They may not always express it, but you're genuinely bringing joy to people.

              Thanks!

Thanks for the reminder, Don! For some reason, I had forgotten all about In Love's Hiding Place. Just gave it a listen on YouTube. A remaster and release of this track along with all of Dionne's unreleased Arista recordings is definitely in order.
