Hallo Spaceboy: David Bowie’s “Glastonbury 2000” Comes To CD, DVD, LP In November

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

With anticipation building for the October 12 release of David Bowie’s box set Loving the Alien [1983-1988], Parlophone has just pressed “fast forward” and announced another title from the late superstar.  On November 30, the label will release Glastonbury 2000, a document of Bowie’s epic June 25 performance of that year, in multiple editions including 2CD, 2CD/DVD, 3LP, and standard and high-resolution digital.

Glastonbury 2000 presents Bowie’s complete 21-song set from the festival in both audio and video formats.  Previously, only 30 minutes of the show had been broadcast on television including “Heroes,” which was seen in the recent David Bowie Is… museum exhibition.  All versions of Glastonbury 2000 feature Bowie’s diary entries which were originally published in Time Out.  He wrote, “As of 1990 I got through the rest of the 20th century without having to do a big hits show. Yes, yes, I know I did four or five hits on the later shows but I held out pretty well I thought…big, well known songs will litter the field at Glastonbury this year. Well, with a couple of quirks, of course.”

The setlist is, indeed, heavy on popular favorites including “Changes,” “Life on Mars?,” “China Girl,”  “Ashes to Ashes,” “Rebel, Rebel,” “Fame,” “Starman,” and the Bowie-penned Mott the Hoople hit, “All the Young Dudes.”  The previously mentioned “quirks” might have referred to “Hallo Spaceboy” from 1995’s Outside, “Little Wonder” from 1997’s Earthling, or even his opening song, the Station to Station cover of Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington’s ballad “Wild is the Wind,” originally sung by Johnny Mathis in the 1957 movie of the same name.  NME rapturously described the concert as “not only the greatest Glastonbury headline performance but the best headline slot at any festival ever.”

The greatest-hits-and-more set is presented in newly-mastered audio and upgraded video.  Jonathan Barnbrook, who collaborated with the artist on the covers of Heathen, The Next Day, and Blackstar, has designed the striking new artwork.  Liner notes are provided by Caitlin Moran, who originally reviewed the concert for The Times.

Look for Glastonbury 2000 from Parlophone on November 30!  You’ll find the full track listing and pre-order links below!  Amazon U.S. links should be active shortly.

The David Bowie estate needs to discover blu-ray.

The performance, I believe, was filmed on videotape, so it cannot be “upscaled” to high-definition. Therefore putting it on Blu-ray would be pointless.
