Tell Everyone: Ronnie Lane Rarities and Fan Favorites Collected on "Just For A Moment: Music, 1973-1997," Due in May

March 25, 2019 By Sam Stone 1 Comment

PRE-ORDER 6-CD BOX FROM AMAZON.CO.UK

Universal Music Catalogue has announced the May 17 release of a much welcomed Ronnie Lane box set that's chock full of rarities and fan favorites from across his solo career. Entitled Just For a Moment: Music, 1973-1997, the 6-CD box set boasts 118 tracks that span three decades.

Ronnie Lane was always something of a maverick, a creative tour de force who was wager to blaze his own path and break away from the pressures of the industry. He first garnered acclaim as the bassist for The Small Faces, who later became The Faces. He wrote some of those bands' most popular singles - among them "Itchycoo Park," "Ooh La La, "Glad and Sorry," "Annie," and "Debris." But he eventually got disillusioned by rock and roll excesses and elected to get back to the land, setting up shop in a country farm. From there, he formed Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, organized the circus tour The Passing Show, and built The Lane Mobile Studio.

Though he wasn't pleased with industry forces, Lane never truly left music behind. As this box set attests, he continued writing and performing in a unique style that blended his folk, R&B, and country influences, imbued with a down-home energy. Along the way, he collaborated with the likes of Ron Wood, Pete Townshend (with whom he recorded the album Rough Mix), Eric Clapton (who wrote "Wonderful Tonight" around a campfire at Lane's farm), as well as Gallagher and Lyle, Kevin Westlake, Billy Livesey. Though Lane battled with multiple sclerosis, from which he'd eventually succumb in 1997, he continued writing and performing until the end, leaving along a vast musical legacy, which Just For a Moment celebrates.

Just For a Moment: The Music, 1973-1997 collects four of Ronnie Lane's solo albums: 1974's Anymore for Anymore (along with its contemporaneous singles); Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance, also from 1974; One For the Road (1976); and his 1979 effort, See Me. Also featured are tracks from his collaborative albums such as the aforementioned Rough Mix and Mahoney's Last Stand, a soundtrack album credited to Lane and Ron Wood that was recorded with Townshend in 1972 and finally released four years later. The first four discs are supplemented with bonus tracks, including singles, B-Sides, alternate takes, live recordings, rare studio sessions, and other unreleased goodies. Disc 5, meanwhile, includes live material from the German Rockpalast series from 1980, as well as session takes, demos and live recordings. Disc 6 highlights Lane's time in the U.S., including radio broadcasts from the late 1980s, along with studio sessions from 1989 and 1992, a demo for "Spiritual Babe," and live material recorded in Japan in 1990.

Complementing the musical selections, the 6-CD set features extensive liner notes that detail Ronnie's, life, art, and work with essays by Paolo Hewitt, Kris Needs, and Kent Benjamin, as well as a foreword by Pete Townshend. All the contents are presented in a hardcover book with an outer slipcase. Also included are a book of Lane's lyrics and a fold-out poster.

In addition to the box set, UMC will also release an 18-track, 1-CD (or 2-LP) distillation of the collection. All the configurations will be released on May 17 through Universal Music Catalogue. While Amazon US links have yet to go live, you can find Amazon UK links below, along with track lists for the 6-CD, 1-CD, and 2-LP editions.

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
