Welcome to this week's Release Round-Up. Here's what's due for March 29!
John Coltrane, Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings [5 CD] (Craft Recordings) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The year 1958 was a breakout one for saxophone legend John Coltrane. It marked the year when Coltrane--already well-established as a talented sideman--began to make a name for himself as a solo musician and developed his signature "sheets of sound" style while exploring many other routes. To mark the 70th anniversary of Prestige, Coltrane's complete 1958 recordings are released today on the new Coltrane '58: The Prestige Recordings box set from Craft. It brings together 37 tracks in the order they were recorded to give the listener an unprecedented, session-by-session view of Coltrane's first full year as a solo artist. The music has been newly remastered from the original analog tapes by Paul Blakemore and will be presented in a linen-bound folio across 5 CDs. The set also includes a 76-page booklet with liner notes written by jazz expert Ashley Kahn and historical photographs of Coltrane and his collaborators taken by Francis Wolff and Esmond Edwards. An 8-LP edition will follow in late April. Learn more about the Coltrane box here!

Marvin Gaye, You're The Man (LP/digital) (UMe/Motown)
Following the landmark release of What's Going On, Marvin Gaye returned with the song "You're The Man," written about presidential candidate George McGovern. When that track failed to reach mainstream audiences, Gaye went back to the studio and recorded an album's worth of material, producing himself and writing with the likes of Willie Hutch; Hal Davis; Pam Sawyer and Gloria Jones; and Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell. Apart from the "You're The Man" single, none of that material was released at the time. Now, You're the One rounds up all of the soul legend's solo and non-soundtrack work from '72, 15 tracks of which are making their vinyl debut. In addition to the material recorded for the proposed album, You're The Man will also include a rare, long version of the cancelled 1972 single "I Want To Come Home For Christmas," and an unreleased mix of its instrumental B-side, "Christmas in the City." Also among the tracks are three new mixes by acclaimed writer and producer Salaam Remi (or SaLaAM ReMi). He's remixed "Symphony," "I'd Give My Life For You," and "My Last Chance." In addition to the music, the 2-LP edition of You're The Man will include new liner notes by Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz. Available on vinyl and digital, with a CD to follow on April 26.

Tina - The Tina Turner Musical: Original London Cast Recording (Ghostlight) (digital only) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K.)
In advance of its Broadway premiere later this year, Ghostlight Records delivers the long-awaited Original London Cast Recording of the smash hit bio-musical currently packing houses nightly at London's Aldwych Theatre. Written by Katori Hall and approved by the superstar herself, Tina (which opened in April 2018) is a gritty cut above the typical jukebox musical, and succeeds largely on its unvarnished portrait of the star as embodied by star Adrienne Warren. Her vocal power, channeling Turner's style without resorting to impression, is heard throughout this sizzling 24-track, 70-minute album on such classic anthems as "River Deep-Mountain High," "What's Love Got to Do with It," "Nutbush City Limits," "Private Dancer," "I Can't Stand the Rain," and "Proud Mary." Nicholas Skilbeck provides the show's arrangements and Ethan Popp has penned the orchestrations fusing drama, soul, pop, and rock. A CD release is planned for later this year, but the album is available today as a download and from all streaming services.

Various Artists, Joni 75 (DVD) (Rhino) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Music icon Joni Mitchell celebrated her 75th birthday in style last November with a pair of tribute concerts held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in L.A. The line-up (which Joni helped select) featured many of her closest friends and dearest collaborators, including Graham Nash, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kris Kristofferson, and James Taylor. Also on the bill were Diana Krall, Brandi Carlile, Rufus Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Glen Hansard, Norah Jones, and Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro & Xochi Flores. Featuring a set of Joni classics and deep cuts from across her career, each night was a thrilling tribute full of excellent music. November 7 was even more magnificent, as Mitchell herself attended and even appeared onstage to blow out birthday candles and sing along as the all-star band and more than 3,000 fans sang "Happy Birthday" and "Big Yellow Taxi" in tribute to her. Rhino's new DVD of the concert film features all but one of the songs from the November 7 tribute concert, performed in the order they were played.
