Tiger Man: Elvis Presley Rarities Abound on 11-CD "Live 1969" Box Set and "American Sound 1969" Studio Collection

June 27, 2019 By Sam Stone 16 Comments

PRE-ORDER BOX SET FROM AMAZON.COM

Legacy Recordings is celebrating Elvis Presley's 1969 run at The International Hotel in Las Vegas with a box set fit for a king. Live 1969 is an 11-CD set due out on August 9 that boasts newly mixed and mastered versions of the King of Rock and Roll's legendary return to the stage.

Following his 1968 comeback on NBC, Presley had a hankering to perform live again. As he remembered, "I missed the closeness of a live audience. So just as soon as I got out of the movie contracts, I started to do live performances again." So, he began the first of many residencies at Las Vegas' International Hotel, performing several shows a day for enraptured audiences. Elvis was armed with fresh material, including the hit singles "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds." Backing him up were a fantastic group of musicians eventually dubbed The TCB Band, a full orchestra, and two vocal groups: The Imperials and The Sweet Inspirations. With the unbeatable band and a renewed energy for playing for audiences, Presley ushered in a new era of his career full of energetic performances and setlists drawing from his back catalogue, his current hits, and a number of exciting cover versions.

All the exhilarating performances that Elvis and the band put on from August 21 to August 26, 1969 will be accounted for on Legacy's new box set. Some of the concerts have been previously issued in the last decade on various BMG and Follow That Dream collections and box sets (not to mention the August 23rd dinner show, which saw a limited Record Store Day vinyl issue). But Live 1969 also features never-before-released complete performances, including the Midnight Shows on August 22 and 24, 1969, as well as the Dinner Show from August 25. Every performance has been newly remixed and remastered for the all-encompassing box set.

Complementing the comprehensive audio program will be a 52-page book filled with rare photographs, memorabilia, and an oral history compiled by Ken Sharp featuring the recollections of Presley, Col. Tom Parker, Tom Jones, Jerry Schilling, James Burton, Cissy Houston, Terry Blackwood, George Klein, Fats Domino and others. In all, it promises to be the most comprehensive look at this chapter of Elvis Presley's storied career - a triumphant return that features The King in top form throughout.

PRE-ORDER FROM AMAZON.COM

For fans who might want a more digestible look back on this era of Elvis, Legacy will also release Live at the International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV August 26, 1969, featuring Presley's complete August 26th Midnight show. The standard-edition, 180-gram black vinyl pressing will be released on August 9. Fans can find a limited edition bundle of the album, an exclusive T-shirt, and replica International Hotel room key over at ShopElvis.com. An exclusive hot pink and yellow color vinyl variant will be available from Shop Graceland and fans who pre-order there will receive a special Elvis TCB keychain while supplies last.

PRE-ORDER FROM iTUNES

While his live performances in 1969 were the stuff of legend, Elvis was also electric in the studio. In January, Presley and his band began sessions at American Sound Studios in Memphis, which resulted in his acclaimed From Elvis In Memphis album and its lead single "In the Ghetto." He also laid down such iconic songs as "Suspicious Minds," "Kentucky Rain," "Rubberneckin'," and "Don't Cry Daddy" at the famed studio. On August 23, Legacy will release American Sound 1969. The digital collection will include more than 90 tracks from his sessions there in January and February of 1969. The rare and previously unreleased material is staggering. Fans will get to hear all existing alternate takes of "In The Ghetto," "Suspicious Minds," and "Kentucky Rain," plus stabs at contemporary hits and plenty more. You can pre-order the collection from iTunes here. Legacy also invites listeners to enjoy their Elvis Presley: Live 1969 & More playlist here. It features the "digital single" preview of the album featuring "Suspicious Minds" and "Mystery Train/Tiger Man" as recorded on August 23. You can hear both tracks below!

So clear some space on the shelves, make some room for Elvis on your hard drive, and take a look at the full track listings for these comprehensive celebrations of Elvis' late-career rebirth!

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

Allow me to be the first to post/vent their displeasure at the studio collection being DIGITAL ONLY.

I’d quicker make room on my shelf for those on CD than the live set.

You may be better off to by the 3 double CDs on FTD
They are Elvis In Memphis ,Elvis Back in Memphis, and Elvis At American Sound Studios.
      123 total tracks.

Interesting. Are the tracks and the mastering the same?

Unfortunately that "Live 1969" set looks to me like it is in oversized 7" packaging so I'll have to pass on it. The Elvis estate seems to have a fondness for that unnecessarily awkward size for some reason.

I have a number of the RCA and FTD releases referenced in the track listings, so I have to ask myself (even as a loyal Elvis fan): do I really need 11 versions of essentially the same show?

    I agree with Andy.

How much of the same material done of a very short period of time do we need. However, the American Sound-1969 Package looks interesting even though a 2 cd package of some of this material was previously released.

Will the studio 1969 material be available in a lossless download format? If so, where and for how much? Thanks.

If it is, it'll likely be on 7digital, Qobuz, HDTracks and the Tidal store.

It says the live material is all remixed. Do we know who did it? I have several of these live shows on earlier FTD releases; the more recent ones are mixed by Vic Anesini and are to my ears superior (wide stereo spectrum). E.g., 2013's Hot August Night has a preferable mix to my ears than 2002's Elvis at the International.

I have about 3-4 of these shows total... if Anesini has remixed all of them, I might be convinced to take the plunge.

It's too bad that BMG/Sony have went cheap with this 7" release. Would have been great with the bigger boxset.
