Weavers of Dreams: Blue Note Expands Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series Through Fall

VISIT BLUE NOTE STORE

Back in February, we reported on Blue Note Records’ Tone Poet Reissue Series, a new initiative by label president Don Was and audiophile jazz expert Joe Harley that presents detailed vinyl reissues of Blue Note classics and overlooked titles from the label’s 80-year history.  Each title is an all-analog affair, mastered from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray and pressed onto 180-gram vinyl at RTI, then housed in deluxe gatefold packaging.

The first titles – Wayne Shorter’s Etcetera and Chick Corea’s Now He Sings, Now He Sobs – have been acclaimed by critics and audiophiles alike, and we’re excited to report on Blue Note’s updated schedule through the fall with the next batch coming later this month, on October 25.  You can find the full list below and order your copies at the Blue Note Online Store!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day.

Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

  1. Do the new high-res digital downloads offered by vendors such as Qobuz use the same masters as the Tone Poet 80 vinyl series? Thanks.

  2. Let me clarify my previous post: it seems that some (or maybe all) of those downloads are not high res, but they are still CD quality. My main concern, though, is whether they use the same masters as the Tone Poet 80 series. Thanks.

Here is one example from Qobuz:

    Minor Move
    Tina Brooks

    1 disc(s) – 6 track(s)
    Total length: 00:47:25
    Main artist: Tina Brooks
    Composer: Various Composers
    Label: CM BLUE NOTE (A92)
    Genre: Jazz
