A heavy-duty vinyl collection from Rhino Records will tell the story of John Coltrane in honor of his centennial – one of several forthcoming titles set to honor the legendary saxophonist.

John Coltrane 100 – Selections from 1951-1967 assembles 37 tracks across six 180-gram vinyl LPs showcasing Coltrane as both a bandleader and a sideman who logged time with Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and others. Licensed from multiple labels including Atlantic, Impulse!, Columbia, Blue Note and Prestige, it’s one of the most definitive musical portraits of Trane ever assembled. Pressed at Optimal in Germany and remastered by Bernie Grundman, the package will also include a 12-page booklet with new liner notes by writer and Coltrane scholar Ben Ratliff. A 2LP and single CD set will feature 11 highlighted songs from the project. All versions hit stores October 2, just after what would have been Coltrane’s 100th birthday on September 23.

Nearly 60 years since Coltrane’s passing from liver cancer at only 40 years old, his innovative approach to jazz continues to inspire and galvanize audiences and players. A pioneer in the modal and free jazz spaces who brilliantly fused ideas of faith and spirituality with his art in works like the 1965 landmark A Love Supreme, recent years have been quite generous in terms of archival excavations of Trane’s work. Projects like Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album (2018) and Blue World (2019), plus live titles like A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle (2021) and Evenings At the Village Gate: John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy (2023) have garnered considerable attention among collectors and musicologists alike.

Rhino’s box set is not the only commemoration of Coltrane’s career due this year. On September 1, Ten Speed Press/Penguin Random House will publish Coltrane: The Definitive Visual Celebration of the Legend, a coffee table book of rare photos and testimonials from Carlos Santana, Patti Smith, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, Dev Hynes (also known as producer Blood Orange) and Coltrane’s son Ravi (who edited the book). It is widely expected that, concurrently with Trane’s centennial, Impulse!/Verve will announce the long-awaited release of The Tiberi Tapes, another unique holy grail among fans. Previewed on a Record Store Day-exclusive 12″ single, the project will feature the amateur recordings of saxophonist Frank Tiberi (a future Berklee College of Music professor and leader of Woody Herman’s orchestra) as he followed Coltrane in clubs around New York and Philadelphia in the early ’60s.
