Let's Have a Party: Motown, James Brown, U2, Sinatra Part of UMe's RSD Black Friday Festivities

October 9, 2019 By The Second Disc Leave a Comment

With the lead-up to Record Store Day Black Friday in full swing, it's time to take a look at what Universal Music Group has prepped for the semi-annual vinyl bonanza.

The label's eight major catalog vinyl releases are familiar to longtime RSD consumers. Some celebrate an iconic anniversary (as is the case for titles by U2, Frank Sinatra and Frank Zappa), one complements a general catalog title (an unreleased live James Brown album), and some just feature great music in rare presentations.

Learn all about UMG's Black Friday titles below. All will be available at your participating indie retailer on November 29.

James Brown, Live At Home: The After Show (Republic)
As if the newly-restored 1969 homecoming show featured on Live At Home With His Bad Self wasn't exciting enough, this LP presents rare and newly mixed material from that program's aftershow, including an interview with The Godfather of Soul conducted by his high school principal! (5000 copies)

Charlie Parker, The Magnificent Charlie Parker (Clef)
Talk about a rare Bird! This 1955 compilation with a unique cover drawn by David Stone Martin is back on vinyl for Black Friday. (3000 copies)

Frank Sinatra, "My Way" b/w "My Way (Live)" (Frank Sinatra Enterprises)
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of Sinatra's signature singles, it's part of this new 12" release, backed with both a studio outtake and a live version from 1971. (4000 copies)

Sublime, Roots Of Sublime (Geffen)
Explore the reggae side of the '90s ska-punk outfit with this mini-album of four album cuts and rarities backed by recordings that inspired each track, including tunes by Dee Dee Warwick, Bad Brains, The Wailing Souls and The Melodians. (3000 copies)

U2, Three EP (Island)
Four decades ago, Three introduced Ireland to rock quartet U2. Their debut EP, including "Out Of Control," "Stories For Boys" and "Boy/Girl" in their original recordings (the first two were recut for debut album Boy in 1980), has been remastered for this numbered, limited edition. (7000 copies)

Various Artists, Motown Rare and Unreleased (Motown)
Another treat for fans of The Sound of Young America during its 60th anniversary year, this colored vinyl set offers a dozen lesser-known gems from The Supremes, The Temptations, The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & The Pips and many more. (4000 copies)

Various Artists, Saturday Morning Cartoons' Greatest Hits (Geffen)
This kitschy collection from 1995, featuring alt-rock takes on popular cartoon theme songs (including the Ramones' peppy version of "Spider-Man" plus tracks by Matthew Sweet, Collective Soul, Wax and others), returns as a double vinyl album. (4000 copies)

Frank Zappa, Peaches En Regalia EP (Zappa)
To mark 50 years of Hot Rats, the Zappa family will release this EP featuring the mono single masters and rhythm track mixes of "Peaches En Regalia" and "Little Umbrellas" on a 10" picture disc. (4000 copies)
