Revolution Rock: The Clash Celebrate Landmark Anniversary With “London Calling Scrapbook” and Vinyl Reissue

November 14, 2019 By Sam Stone 2 Comments

When The Clash released their third studio effort, London Calling in December 1979, they unleashed an instant classic. The double album — with its diverse blend of punk, reggae, rockabilly, ska, R&B and jazz — was quickly heralded as a high-water mark for the band and for punk music. John Rockwell of The New York Times wrote in 1980 that London Calling “reveals depths of invention and creativity barely suggested by the band’s previous work.” The same yearm Down Beat ‘s Michael Goldberg asserted that the album “defines the state of rock and roll” and would be the exemplar “against which the very best of [the 1980s] will have to be judged.”

The album is just as relevant 40 years on. To celebrate its anniversary, Legacy Recordings has announced a new hardback book called The London Calling Scrapbook. Due this Friday, November 15, the 120-page volume serves as a companion to the classic album, filled with previously unseen archival material, photographs, lyric notes, and other exclusive memorabilia. The package will also include the core album packed onto one CD.

Fans who’d prefer just the music won’t have to wait at all, however, as Legacy has also released a 2-LP edition of the album, as well as a 2-CD mini-LP replica edition that follows the original album sequencing and disc breaks. Both configurations are in stores now.

You can secure your copies of the new London Calling editions with the links below!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
