On June 12, Real Gone Music will dig into the ’60s underground with a pair of exciting vinyl releases.
The first is a reissue of The Electric Prunes’ Release of an Oath. By the time the album was released in 1968, the band – known for “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)” – featured none of its original members, yet two key players in the band’s success remained: engineer-producer Dave Hassinger and composer-arranger extraordinaire David Axelrod. It’s said that Axelrod’s complex arrangements led to band members leaving in frustration during sessions for the Prunes’ previous album, Mass in F Minor. This time around, for the Old Testament-inspired Release of an Oath, Axelrod was armed with members of The Wrecking Crew. The expert session players tackled his compositions (and their jazzy, sometimes avant-garde arrangements) with ease, creating a classic that still sounds exciting to this day.
Real Gone’s upcoming edition is the first-ever vinyl reissue of Release of an Oath and will be presented on 140-gram maroon-and-white splatter vinyl, limited to just 1,000 copies.

The same day, Real Gone will release a new double-LP gold vinyl edition of the celebrated Tim Buckley collection The Dream Belongs To Me: Rare and Unreleased Recordings, 1968-1973. Originally released on CD in 2001, the 14-track set celebrates one of the era’s most captivating artists with early versions of fan favorites circa 1968 and demos for 1973’s Sefronia. These stark and stripped-down versions are a fascinating glimpse into the creative process of a unique, singular artist whose work continues to endure. This gold vinyl edition retains the original liner notes and rare photos and is presented in a gatefold sleeve. It’s limited to 1,000 copies, so fans will want to secure their orders soon!

It is not the first ever reissue on vinyl. It came out on vinyl legit in the ’80s in Greece.
Fair enough. But that release is still under the original catalog number (RS 6316). I would consider that a re-pressing rather than a reissue with remastering and all that the designation entails today. (Germany re-pressed the album in the 1970s, as well, for its tenth anniversary.) How can you say the Buckley is unreleased, but then reveal that it WAS released two decades ago?

It was unreleased at the time of its original release, hence the title and the headline here; I think the article makes that abundantly clear. Renaming the reissue “Once-Rare and Once-Unreleased Recordings” would have been rather silly… 🙂
