All I Want Is You...: Peter Jackson's "The Beatles: Get Back" Documentary Pushed To 2021

June 15, 2020 By Sam Stone 14 Comments

THE BEATLES IN THE BEATLES: GET BACK. PHOTO BY LINDA McCARTNEY

Back in March, we gave you the news about The Beatles: Get Back and joined Beatles fans everywhere who were excitedly waiting to enjoy the long-awaited Peter Jackson film in movie theaters.  Now, only three months later, we're in a different world.  The COVID-19 outbreak has not only forced many movie theaters to shut down indefinitely, but has also left studios scrambling to reschedule releases and reconsider delivery options.  Accordingly, we'll have to wait a bit longer to see the documentary, as Disney has pushed the film's premiere back to August 27, 2021.  It had previously been scheduled for this September.

The Beatles: Get Back will no doubt be worth the wait, though.  Peter Jackson has been granted access to a trove of footage documenting The Beatles' month-long sessions for Get Back, the project which became their final album, Let It Be .  Jackson and his team of restorers combed through fifty hours of film and 140 hours of audio recordings to create the new documentary, which is said to present a different view from the 1970 film Let It Be.  The feature boasts a wealth of never-before-seen footage and the complete rooftop concert.

After decades of waiting for a project like this what's another year or so?  How The Beatles and Apple will fill the product void this autumn remains to be seen, but in the meantime, stay safe and stay healthy.  We'll be sure to keep you posted on any developments.

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

Really don't get such long wait to release a film that will not stay as long as 3 days in theathres.

With Disney’s clout, and promotion, not to mention it’s the friggin’ BEATLES, it will run longer than that.

If Disney’s nature documentaries can run a few weeks, so can a long-awaited Beatles movie. No one said it had to make Marvel/Star Wars money. For a documentary, it will just fine.

Meanwhile, how about a few more hot takes?

Claudio, think you're way off. This is a big deal, original movie not in theaters very long. Think it sucks that it is delayed, no set production, only selecting from previous tapes. Another bad Disney decision.

Thanks for sharing the latest on the Get Back Beatles movie Sam. I always enjoy your writings.
With the Current Crisis looking as though it’s crawling to its slow end, it gives the Jackson people even more time to work on the project. I’m sure we’ll be better off!
By the way, do you know anything about Mark Lewisham‘s next instalment of The Beatles biography? Keep up your good work! 🐝

I'd recommend looking on YouTube for a video titled "Lockdown won't stop Mark Lewisohn making new Beatles discoveries" for the latest.

They can't just put it on Disney+ like they've done with so many of their
films that were originally set for a theatrical release???

Beginning to think I won't live long enough to see this one. The waiting is the hardest part.

I agree. This film will likely be in a long term limbo similar to the Jimi Hendrix Royal Albert Hall film. Most of the original fans won't live long enough to see it. COVID-19 will still be around in 2021, and that situation will again (and again) be used as an excuse to not release the "Get Back" film.

Is there a companion album or soundtrack going to be released like Ron Howard's Eight Days A Week? What about the tie in books that were scheduled for release in September?

To my knowledge, the only (planned) upcoming Beatles music release that would have coincided with a tie-in book was "John Lennon-Plastic Ono Band".

There is a book about All Things Must Pass due later in the year, too.

I'd be willing to sacrifice the "Get Back" movie in exchange for CD/Blu-Ray boxed sets of "Let It Be", "George Harrison-All Things Must Pass" & John Lennon-Plastic Ono Band", but, I suspect that we'll get none of the above. The "Get Back" film would have been interesting to watch once, but the boxed set projects that I mentioned would have been played many times at my house,
Years and years of hype build-up for the "Get Back" movie may create expectations that the film itself can't live up to. Next year, Disney will have some new excuse to not release the film. I agree, that the movie theater run would have been brief. Even if Disney had released the film this year, they could have shown it on Disney cable channels and steaming services. It wouldn't have been a financial washout.
I hope that Apple Corps doesn't leave Beatles fans totally empty handed this year. None of us original fans are getting any younger. I turned 64 a few days ago.

Why don't they just stream it/ release the DVD with outtakes bonus footage etc? No one appreciates the theater and it wouldn't rake cash like DVD people fans will buy
